ANDREW LYNN
Lawyer and Reform Southport spokesman.

EVERY one of us in Southport has felt moments of real anguish in the last ten days.

The horrific attack on the little girls has left us with three dead. The other eight girls who were injured will carry their trauma forever, as will their loved ones.

We all know families affected. As a Southport resident, I have heard first-hand accounts of the incident so heartbreaking that I cannot write them down. As a father of young children, I also know that there is a sense of unease among local families that will not easily go away.

The attack on the little girls in Southport was exceptional in its depravity. It was met with shock and incredulity. Nobody imagined the kind of horrors we hear about on the news could happen here. The question now is how to take things forward.
We are reasoning animals and try to make sense of our experiences. At times of great trauma, we look for and need answers. Who did it? Why?

Did the authorities fail us in any way? What can we do to prevent anything like it happening again? Ordinary decent people across Southport, of all backgrounds, share this desire.

If there is a feeling, even if unwarranted, that the authorities are distracting us from having informed and grown-up conversations, then this can only be detrimental to our democracy. Of course, all rioting is to be deplored.

Demonise

The Labour government and its sympathisers are, however, now going further and casually deploying the term “far-Right” to characterise anyone who shows concern about policy failings, of this and previous governments, in relation to immigration and integration.

Many decent and law-abiding people have such concerns. As Reform UK’s spokesperson in Southport, I have publicly and consistently stated real change can only happen by voting for it, and that there is no place for violence in our democracy.
At a local level, I was able to work out a Joint Statement with other political parties to that effect. We could do so because we condemned violence, rather than demonised groups of people. The approach of this Labour government is, in contrast, thoroughly divisive.

It could not be more obvious to me, as a professional in the field of dispute resolution, that if you demonise people, or mischaracterise their motives, a positive outcome becomes incredibly difficult.
What we need to do is to give people hope that their problems can be resolved through the democratic process. We must let them know that, while violence will not be tolerated, their concerns are being heard and a genuine effort is being made to fairly and frankly address the challenges ahead.
