A Fresh Start

When Sarah opened the door, she hesitated. The weight of years of clutter, dust, and memories had turned her home into a place she no longer recognized. Every corner held a reminder of struggles she hadn’t yet faced. She had tried to clear it herself—many times—but the task felt impossible.

That’s when Grant A Smile CIC stepped in. Our team arrived not just with cleaning supplies but with understanding, patience, and a trauma-informed approach. Only recognised as a standalone mental health disorder in 2013 – but still strikingly under-researched – hoarding is thought to affect between 2.5% and 6% of the population. According to the recent US Senate report, The Consequences of Clutter, an ageing society means this number is likely to increase.

“If it rises at this rate and continues to rise, we’re going to be facing a hoarding pandemic,” said Dr Lynne Drummond, author of the recently published Everything You Need to Know About Hoarding.

Hoarding, too often, is an issue of life and death. In 2022, the London Fire Brigade attended 1,036 hoarding-related fires which resulted in 186 injuries and 10 deaths. In Wales, hoarding is responsible for almost a third of fire-related deaths.

The number of deaths and injuries caused when hoards cause people to trip and fall, or when they become trapped under an “avalanche” of possessions are undocumented, but experts say are significant.
