, The Lady Chief Justice joined the unveiling of an English Heritage blue plaque honouring Gertrude Tuckwell, whose appointment as one of the first female magistrates helped pave the way for generations of women in the justice system.

At the ceremony, the Lady Chief Justice said:

“Gertrude Tuckwell understood that being the first matters most when those who come first ensure that they do not also become the last. She set the wheels in motion for the diverse, modern magistracy from which our society benefits today.

"Diversity in the magistracy is not only something to celebrate in itself: it is vital to connect courts with the society that magistrates serve, to strengthen public confidence and to bring a breadth of experience to judicial decision-making.”

The new President of the King’s Bench Division (PKBD), Sir Mark Warby, was sworn in by the Lady Chief Justice yesterday at a ceremony in the Royal Courts of Justice.

The PKBD is responsible for the work of the King’s Bench Division (KBD) and the deployment of its judges. The KBD deals with common law civil claims, judicial reviews of decisions made by public bodies, and some of the most important and complex criminal cases heard in the Crown Court and Court of Appeal (Criminal Division).

Speeches were made in recognition of his appointment by the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, Andrew Caldecott KC and Adrienne Page KC.

Sir Mark Warby said: “It is a great privilege to be sworn in today as President of the King’s Bench Division. I look forward to leading the judges of the Division, who decide important cases in a wide range of legal areas, including administrative law (such as judicial reviews of public bodies), planning, media and communications disputes, and some of the most high-profile and complex criminal trials and appeals. Together, we will work to ensure that cases are resolved fairly and efficiently, while upholding the rule of law.”.

Today the Rt Hon. Alex Norris MP has been sworn in as Lord Chancellor at the Royal Courts of Justice.

At this morning's ceremony, the Lady Chief Justice, Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill also swore in the Rt Hon. Ellie Reeves MP as Attorney General and Andy Slaughter MP as Solicitor General.

The Lord Chancellor has an important constitutional role in maintaining the rule of law, supporting the independent judiciary and helping ensure justice can be delivered effectively. While those who held the role were once able to sit as judges and decide cases themselves, changes made in 2005 transferred their judicial responsibilities to the judiciary, strengthening the separation of powers.

From tomorrow (1 October) a new Practice Direction on Listing comes into effect. It is the first national framework for listing cases, providing consistency of approach across criminal courts in England and Wales. It provides direction to judges on prioritising cases based on the human impact of delay on participants and ensuring fairness in court proceedings.

New guidance on the use of live video links in criminal proceedings will also take effect, supporting consistent use of remote participation where appropriate.
