We had a lovely time at the May meet up for our socially prescribed group, the Barts Heritage Explorers!
Thank you to Carmel and Jo from for giving us a tour of the art on display in the West Wing of
The group enjoyed learning the stories behind the art, and seeing it in a new way. It was great to hear from members of the group as they reflected on how the art impacted their experiences when in hospital too.
We are working on an exciting project with Vital Arts and can't wait to share more soon!

To mark the end of Creativity & Wellbeing Week wanted to share these lovely photos from our drop in workshop with last week for staff and patients
Participants dropped by our stall to create a small patch using yarn wrapping techniques. The patches were then put together to make a collaborative artwork by the Barts community.
This event was part of our Creative Health and Wellbeing programme for Barts Hospital Staff and Patients, running as part of our funded project 'Sharing Historic Barts'.
Over the next few weeks, we have lots of free events aimed at improving your wellbeing through creativity. Including: Wellbeing Walks, Breath and Movement Workshops and Mindful Art Observations. See our website for more details, activities are open to everyone.
We are also working with for a Creative Health and Heritage Day for Barts Patients on Saturday 20 June. Email [email protected] for more details and to sign up.

Happy International Nurses Day! Taking place every year, it is a day to celebrate and recognise the incredible contribution of nursing staff in the UK and worldwide.
Many of our volunteers trained and worked as nurses. Jackie trained here in the early 1980s and shared this brilliant photo (image 1) of her and her team in the Great Hall of Barts North Wing!
"This photograph was taken in December 1983. It shows the staff on the two Acute Medical wards at Barts, Rahere and Colston. I was a newly qualified Barts Nurse and this was my first job. I had to come in on my day off for the photograph! 42 years later I am relishing my return to Barts as part of the volunteer team for Barts North Wing” - Jackie
The second photo was taken on View Day, and you can see Jackie on the far right of the image. View Day is an annual day to celebrate the hospital's connection to the City of London and was historically when the Lord Mayor would 'view' the wards. It is actually View Day tomorrow - so perfect timing to share this photo of Jackie and the tea that they made for visitors to the ward.
Today, we recognise the work of Nurses across the whole of and the UK

Much of 2025 was spent preparing to open Barts North Wing to the public after an 18-month conservation and restoration project. The building has now been open for seven months. As we take a breath and look back over the last few months, we want to share some of the project’s numbers for the last year with you.
Visitors
In the first six months of opening, we have welcomed 36,397 visitors through our public programme, open days, and guided tours. All our events, including recently released tour dates, can be booked via our What’s On page.
Creative Health
An important part of our Sharing Historic Barts project is an engagement programme of varied events and workshops that enrich the health and wellbeing of Barts Hospital staff and patients. In the past six months, we have engaged 606 staff and patients through our creative health programme. You can find out more about this programme on our Health and Wellbeing page.
Volunteers
We wouldn’t be anywhere without our volunteers, many of whom have a personal connection to Barts. They have given 2,373 hours to support Barts North Wing. A big thank-you goes out to them.
Thank you to everyone who has visited or taken part in a workshop. Thank you to National Lottery players and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, without whom none of this would be possible

Our dedicated volunteers are a vital part of our team, helping us to welcome visitors to the building and delivering guided tours.
Many of our volunteers have a special connection to some because they currently work here or worked/ trained here, have been a patient or know people who were treated at Barts - or in this case because they were born here!
Our brilliant tour guide Georgie shared these adorable photos of her, and we couldn't not share her story:
'It’s been brilliant to reconnect with Bart’s as an adult and North Wing volunteer. I was delivered at Bart’s by Sir Marcus Setchell, before the maternity ward closed in the 80s, and have visited many times over the years for wedding and christening receptions as well as to the hospital itself.
My dad trained and worked at Bart’s as an Obstetrician Gynaecologist and I remember visiting the hospital for ‘egg collecting’ when I was little, insisting on taking my Easter basket (in reality sitting in the waiting room whilst he did the IVF clinic)!
I’ve loved sharing the hospital’s history and North Wing, now beautifully restored, with our visitors. And I’m really proud to feel a small part of a history that stretches back over 900 years'.
