The theme of this year’s is innovative solutions to end global hunger.

Crucially, that includes both advanced technologies and joined-up, forward-thinking policies. Often the evidence for interventions is clear – but the real challenge is in dismantling entrenched institutional silos and convincing policymakers to act.

At Scriptoria, our Strategic Communications Team bridges this gap. We help sustainable development organisations, governments and NGOs translate complex research into compelling policy narratives that drive real-world impact.

In a recent blog from International Water Management Institute (IWMI), we worked with experts to present the case that the ‘Second Green Revolution’ requires targeted spatial intelligence to protect global food systems.

It is a prime example of how we help our partners amplify evidence to influence decision-makers. If your organisation is struggling to turn complex data into actionable policy priorities, get in touch.

This week, we’re marking 🌍🌾

Sustainable development is Scriptoria’s bread and butter, so this year’s theme, “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow,” feels very relevant to the work we do.

We support people and organisations across the food and agriculture sector, from university researchers to NGOs working directly with farmers and crop breeders.

Our training team brings that experience and passion into the courses we deliver, helping researchers and professionals build practical skills in grant and proposal writing, research communication and project management.

Alongside group training, we also offer 1:1 support for people developing live funding applications, helping them apply what they’ve learned directly to their own proposals.

This year’s UN International Day of Rural Women highlights the pivotal role women in rural areas play in protecting biodiversity, managing water and restoring degraded land. 🐝💧🌾

Scriptoria’s Strategic Communications Team worked with our long-term partner International Water Management Institute (IWMI) to highlight the Institute’s initiatives in this area, including those aimed at strengthening the leadership capacities of Nepalese women in the water and energy sectors. True climate resilience requires looking beyond infrastructure. We must place human equity at the heart of local water, energy and food planning.

To celebrate Scriptoria’s 25th anniversary, we’re making our way through the Sustainable Development Goals and sharing some favourite pieces of Strategic Communications work that have supported each goal.

🔸 Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production 🔸

Project: The International Science Council’s Plastic Pollution Policy Brief

Services: Editing | Graphic design | Layout | Project management

On this journey through the Goals we must mention the International Science Council (ISC), an organisation we’ve been working with since 2021. It may not sound like a sustainable development actor, but the ISC has willingly taken a leading role in sustainability science. It engages in the big policy questions about what constitutes “responsible” consumption and production, because on a global, rather than individual, scale these are scientific questions.

The ISC policy brief “Creating a Strong Interface between Science, Policy and Society to Tackle Global Plastic Pollution” came out in 2023, with a specific audience. The UN Environment Assembly had resolved to end plastic pollution and launched negotiations towards a binding international treaty.

The ISC aimed to hand a science-based approach to the negotiators, and asked 13 researchers to assemble evidence and guidance, led by marine conservationist Margaret Spring.

Honing all of that evidence and guidance into a brief for busy negotiators was the task of Scriptoria’s Strategic Communications Services Team. We edited the text into eight high-impact pages, from the framing of the catastrophe (the infiltration of plastics into the most remote parts of our planet) to a call for responsible action (building an international agreement out of the science of plastic pollution).

As part of our design of the brief, we created a full-page infographic to map out the many consequences of plastic pollution during its production, use and disposal.

This brief’s message has not faded in importance. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution has now met seven times without a breakthrough, and the majority of countries participating still want an ambitious treaty based on solid science and shared responsibility. They will meet again in March.

If you have a policy audience to reach, get in touch.

Today is 👩‍🏫🌍🎓

Many of the researchers we work with are also teachers. As the Autumn term gets underway, finding time for grant writing alongside lectures, marking and supervision can be a real challenge.

Our trainers are all former academics, so they understand that pressure first-hand.

Scriptoria’s Grant Writing Course is designed to make the proposal process feel more manageable. We take participants through each stage of developing a grant, whilst also focusing on the clear, persuasive writing skills that our in-house communications team use every day.

We encourage researchers to treat grant writing as a project: breaking it into smaller, manageable tasks that can fit around a busy teaching schedule.

So today we’re celebrating all those who teach, especially those who bring their research into the classroom.
