International Day of Families

Families are the foundation of every child’s future - but for families whose daily lives are shaped by poverty, insecurity, and exclusion, children are at risk of irreparable harm. Out of school, undernourished, and surrounded by violence, alcoholism, and abuse, many children are left with little hope for a brighter future. Increasing numbers drift into early marriage, child labour, or life alone on the streets.

At Kidasha, we work to improve the lives of the most marginalised and hardest-to-reach families by:
• Helping children stay in school or access alternative learning and training opportunities.
• Rehabilitating and reintegrating street-connected children with their families.
• Establishing community hubs where children can access learning support and safe spaces to report protection concerns, while parents benefit from guidance, counselling, and skills training.
• Working with schools to increase the inclusion, attendance, and attainment of children from marginalised communities.
• Advocating with local government and employers to promote child protection and eliminate child labour and exploitation.

This International Day of Families, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and determination of the families we work with every day - families who continue to fight for a better future for their children despite overwhelming adversity.

Every child deserves the chance to thrive. Every family deserves support, dignity, and hope.

🏏 We were delighted that Andrew Leonard the much loved cricket commentator and long time champion of Nepali cricket, made the time to visit our ‘Breaking Boundaries’ project during his brief trip to Pokhara last week.

A hugely respected figure in Nepal, Andrew received a very warm welcome from the local children. Despite being inundated with requests for autographs, he still found time to bowl a few balls to some of the young batters and speak to the assembled crowd about the wider benefits of team sport for young people - especially those from marginalised communities.

We are also grateful for Andrew’s public recognition of the work of Kidasha and the MCC Foundation in making the project possible and for continuing to support it over the last six years.

The Gulf Crisis is beginning to have a serious impact on vulnerable families in Nepal - and the children Kidasha supports are among the first to feel it . . .

Instability in the Gulf is already creating ripple effects across Nepal. Many families we work with rely on remittances sent home from relatives working in the region, and growing uncertainty is putting those jobs - and incomes - at risk. At the same time, Nepal’s tourism sector, another critical source of income for low-income families, is also under strain. Fluctuations in visitor numbers and reduced earnings in tourism-related work risk leaving already precarious families, with even fewer options to cope.

At the same time, emerging fuel shortages are driving up the cost of food, transport and basic essentials. For families already living on the edge, these pressures translate into very real risks for children:

• Children being pulled out of school
• Increased risk of child labour and street involvement
• Greater exposure to exploitation, neglect, and early marriage
• Rising household stress, debt and food insecurity

We are already seeing early signs of distress among families we work with, and we anticipate these pressures will intensify in the weeks ahead.

Kidasha is responding quickly by increasing direct support to the most vulnerable households, intensifying safeguarding, expanding family outreach, and preparing contingency plans to scale up our response if conditions worsen.

Your support right now is critical. Early intervention can prevent family breakdown, protect children from harm and stop short‑term shocks from becoming long‑term crises.

If you are able to increase your support or make an additional gift at this time, it will make an immediate difference for the children and families most at risk.

You can donate via our website: https://kidasha.org/donate/

We will continue to keep you updated as the situation develops.

Thank you, as always, for standing with us when it matters most.

Today, on the International Day for Street Children, we shine a light on some of the most invisible children in Nepal.

In cities like Pokhara - often seen as a thriving tourist hub - many families live a very different reality. Rapid urbanisation has driven thousands of people into informal settlements, where survival depends on insecure, low-paid daily labour.

For many families, poverty is deepened by crisis. Parents migrate for work, often to the Middle East, through systems that leave them in debt and unsafe conditions. With caregivers absent and incomes unstable, children are left behind in environments marked by stress, neglect, and uncertainty.

These children face daily risks - violence, hunger, poor mental health, and lack of protection. Without support, they are far more vulnerable to exploitation, hazardous labour, early marriage, and trafficking.

As global instability threatens already fragile livelihoods, the risks for these children are only increasing.

At Kidasha, we work alongside communities to identify and support children facing these challenges - before harm occurs, and when it does, ensuring they are not alone.

Today, we stand with street-connected children - because every child deserves safety, care, and a chance to thrive. 💜

From playgrounds to national pride - sport is transforming children’s futures in Nepal . . .

Nepal’s recent cricket success shows what’s possible, but many children still grow up without access to safe spaces, coaching or opportunities. Talent is everywhere - opportunity is not.

Kidasha is changing that.

Through our Breaking Boundaries initiative, children in Pokhara are gaining confidence, staying in school and discovering what they’re capable of:

• 2,000+ children coached
• 600 students in Nepal’s largest inter‑government school tournament
• 24 progressing to district, provincial or national level
• One young woman now playing for Nepal’s national team

We now work in 30 government schools, reaching 4,000+ children across multiple sports - training teachers, developing local coaches, promoting inclusion and ensuring even the most marginalised children can take part.

When sport is part of school life, attendance rises, confidence grows, girls participate more, and new pathways open.

Stories like Riya, now a certified coach; Anish, representing his province; and Rachana, now an international player, show what’s possible when children are given the chance.

But sustaining this progress needs investment.

We’re building a scalable model that connects grassroots sport to education, wellbeing and opportunity -and we’re looking for partners who believe every child deserves the chance to play, grow and thrive.

💜Help us turn potential into performance for thousands more children.

💜A heartfelt thank you to our incredible Brecon Supporters Group!

We were delighted to welcome long‑standing supporters from Brecon to Pokhara recently, where they spent time visiting several of our projects and seeing first‑hand the impact of their generosity.

In true Brecon spirit, they didn’t come empty‑handed - they also presented a cheque for £2,500 to support Kidasha’s frontline work.

We’re deeply grateful for their ongoing commitment, their energy, and for taking the time to meet the team and the children whose lives they help transform. Your support continues to make a real and lasting difference.

Thank you, Brecon.

Across Nepal, thousands of married adolescent girls are living lives defined by poverty, early motherhood, domestic servitude, and violence. Invisible, isolated, and denied choices long before adulthood begins.

But this future is not inevitable.

Kidasha’s 'Learning for Life' programme is already helping girls build literacy and life skills, start small businesses, access services, improve their wellbeing, and become confident young women shaping their own futures.

With the right support, a girl who once had no choices can become someone creating opportunities - for herself, her child, and her community.

As we mark International Women’s Day 2026 and its theme, “Give to Gain,” we’re reminded that generosity fuels transformation.

Your support can help many more girls move from survival to self‑reliance, and from invisibility to agency.

✨New Year, new goals ✨

Are you thinking about taking on a challenge this year?

Maybe you’ve started running again, signed up for a race, or set yourself a new fitness goal - running, cycling, swimming, climbing, walking . . . whatever gets you moving 🏃‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏊‍♀️⛰️

Last year, we were lucky to have some incredible individuals take on amazing challenges: marathons in London and Madrid, a triathlon, and even a large team of paddlers (skiff, canoe and kayak) covering 27 miles along the Thames.

Every one of them chose to use their personal challenge to raise money for Kidasha, supporting our essential work with children living in extreme urban poverty in Nepal.

If you’ve secured a place in a marathon, half marathon or 10k this year - or you’re planning your own challenge - please consider using it as an opportunity to raise funds for Kidasha 💜️.

No minimum target. No pressure. Just whatever you can raise.
Every pound makes a genuine impact, helping to protect vulnerable children and give them the chance of a safer, brighter future.

If you’d like to walk (or ride, swim, climb or trek!) for Kidasha, we would love to hear from you: [email protected]
