Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

Before Walpole Park became the green heart of Ealing, it was part of Sir John Soane's vision for Pitzhanger.

When Soane transformed the estate in the early 1800s, he worked with landscape designer John Haverfield (1744–1820) to reshape the grounds with sweeping drives, picturesque planting and a serpentine lake. Beyond the house stood a productive walled kitchen garden supplying fresh fruit and vegetables for both Pitzhanger and Soane's London home.

More than 200 years later, gardening remains part of life at Pitzhanger thanks to the dedication of our volunteer gardeners, who help care for the historic landscape that surrounds the manor.

This weekend, our annual Plant Sale offers a chance to take a little inspiration home. Browse plants grown and donated by our volunteers, pick up gardening advice, and support the care of Pitzhanger's gardens.

Spend an evening with 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house'.

Join us next Thursday for a curator-led tour exploring the exhibition across Pitzhanger’s galleries and historic interiors — from the sculptural forms of the 'Infidels' series to Phoebe Collings-James’s layered clay paintings.

The tour is included with general admission and takes place during Thursday Late opening hours.

Ealing Borough residents can also enjoy Pay What You Can admission from 5pm, including a free option when booked online in advance.

Bank holiday walks, colourful exhibitions, clay-covered hands and cardboard cities.

Pitzhanger is open this Bank Holiday Monday, 25 May, 10am–5pm, with plenty to explore across the manor, gallery and gardens during May half-term.

Join a Family Clay Workshop with ceramicist Annabel Johnson on 28 May, inspired by our current exhibitions 'Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker' and 'Phoebe Collings-James: a rose, a bridge, a house'.

On 29 May, the Rickyard becomes an ever-changing world of cardboard building, colour and creative play for Mini Makers: Messy Play with artist Mikaela Roe-Bowers.

Garden Without Seasons brings together 29 new and recent works — paintings, collages and prints created over the last four years — where flowers, still lifes and architectural details move between abstraction and figuration.

At the centre of the exhibition are the flora and natural forms that Woods returned to during the pandemic, at a time when familiar objects took on a heightened resonance. Through swirls of wet oil paint and luminous colour, her works invite a slower and more detailed way of looking.

The exhibition continues Woods’ exploration of the natural world, time, absence and the fleeting nature of life, while responding to the historic interiors and gardens of Pitzhanger Manor.

Visitors and critics alike have been falling for the intricate world of Marthe Armitage — where hand-cut lino blocks, botanical forms and flowing patterns unfold across wallpapers, textiles and sketchbooks.

At 96, Armitage’s work still feels remarkably fresh: playful, free-moving and deeply observed.

Across Pitzhanger, sculpture, clay paintings and ceramic works unfold through texture, surface and shifting forms — from the main galleries to Sir John Soane’s historic interiors.

Featuring works from the 'Infidels' series alongside Clay Paintings, the exhibition explores clay as a living material: manipulated, marked and continually changed.

This half-term, Pitzhanger gets a little messier.

Join us for a week of making, play and discovery inspired by the colours, patterns and materials in our current exhibitions.

Build cardboard worlds in the Rickyard with artist Lewis McVey. Shape and press clay with ceramicist Annabel Johnson. Then wander through Sir John Soane’s historic manor and two contemporary exhibitions with fresh eyes.

For little makers, curious families, and anyone who believes creativity should sometimes involve paint on your sleeves.
