1 day to go until Springwatch is on Hampstead Heath!

Hampstead Heath is home to some rare and wonderful wildlife, including more than 650 types of fungi, 27 butterfly species, and over 250,000 trees!

The Heath is a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation; it’s essential, as visitors to this site, we each recognise the responsibility we have to give nature the respect it needs and deserves.

The countdown has begun! There are only 3 days to go until Iolo and the Springwatch team join us on Hampstead Heath, and we can’t wait to have them 🍃

Hampstead Heath is home to many incredible species, right in the heart of London. It’s a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, and it’s essential, as visitors to this site, we each recognise the responsibility we have to give nature the respect it needs and deserves.

As we approach the weekend, please adhere to the Heath’s rules and remain respectful to our team that enforce them. These rules are in place to keep both people and wildlife safe.

Our rules and byelaws can be found on signage and at the Linktree in our bio.

Sheep return to the Heath extension tomorrow, May 29 🐑

This small flock of sheep will be arriving with a special job - using their natural grazing techniques to help us care for an ant-hill site!

The sheep will be shepherded by volunteers, and safe behind fencing. They will be out grazing each day from 7.30am - 7pm until June 8.

Thank you to all involved in this project that helps support insect biodiversity on the Heath 🐜

During the recent Bank Holiday we saw record temperatures, and as a result the Heath experienced exceptionally high visitor numbers, placing increased pressure on both safety resources and the natural environment.

Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Queen’s Park Committee, Alderman Gregory Jones KC, said:

“The recent conduct of some visitors swimming in non-lifeguarded ponds is utterly appalling.

“Swimming is only permitted in the Mixed, Ladies’ and Men’s Ponds for safety reasons.

“Entering other non-lifeguarded water bodies is extremely dangerous, against our byelaws, and causes significant harm to wildlife habitats.

“We always seek to engage with visitors first, but the Constabulary will take enforcement action where necessary, including issuing fines or making arrests.”

Our dedicated ecology and conservation teams work incredibly hard year-round to protect habitats and wildlife. One example is the extensive biodiversity improvements to the Model Boating Pond, which has made the pond home to species such as great crested grebe, reedwarbler, and the breeding swans. Our nesting bird species are monitored by specialist staff alongside many dedicated individuals and volunteer groups; we wish to thank the visitors who support their work by following the rules of the Heath.

Parliament Hill Lido is now open (27 May).

The Lido was closed following an altercation, for the safety of our staff and visitors. The Metropolitan Police Service attended and are investigating.

We condemn the unacceptable behaviour that led to the closure, and thank you for your patience.
