43 ring necked parakeets have reportedly been found dead at Priory Gardens in Orpington in just three weeks, with five more discovered on Monday 7 September
The Greenwich Wildlife Network believes the birds are being deliberately targeted with catapults while they roost in the trees at night
The alleged attackers are reportedly using bright lights to stun the sleeping birds before firing at them, a method known as “lamping.” Wildlife rescuers say projectiles including ball bearings, nuts and bolts have also been found in the park
One injured parakeet was found alive in the lake with a serious chest wound, but sadly it couldn’t be saved 💔
Whatever someone’s views on Britain’s non native parakeets, no wild animal should be subjected to this kind of suffering. These birds were simply roosting in the trees, and it’s heartbreaking to think of them being deliberately targeted while they slept
