A really positive councillor surgery today, with a number of residents taking the time to come along and speak with us about issues affecting the local area.

Several concerns were raised, including anti-social behaviour, Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), road and highways issues, as well as a range of other local matters.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to come along, raise their concerns and share their experiences. These conversations are important and help us understand where residents want action and attention.

I will now be following up on the issues raised with the relevant authorities and services.

The surgery was followed by some time out in the local area, speaking with residents on the doorstep and hearing directly about the issues that matter to them.

Canada Grove – Road Surface

Following concerns raised by residents about the worsening condition of the road surface on Canada Grove, I went down this morning to inspect the affected area and take photographs.

I appreciate that residents have raised concerns about this stretch of road previously and that this is not a new issue. My concern today is that the condition appears to have deteriorated further, which is why I have raised it again for urgent attention.

I have now reported the current condition to West Sussex Highways through their out-of-hours service, highlighting the potential safety risk and requesting urgent attention.

I will provide an update once I hear back from Highways.

In the meantime, please take extra care when travelling along Canada Grove, particularly motorcyclists and cyclists, as the raised and damaged road surface could present a hazard.

📢 Have your say on local council arrangements

Arun District Council is currently carrying out a Community Governance Review, looking at whether town and parish council boundaries and electoral arrangements across parts of the district still properly reflect the communities they serve.

The review includes proposals affecting a number of areas across Arun, including Bognor Regis, where changes to the current Town Council ward arrangements are being considered.

The second stage of the consultation is now open, and residents can view the draft recommendations and submit their views.

🗓 Deadline: 15 October 2026

Whatever your view, I would encourage residents in the areas affected to take a look and have their say before any final decisions are made.

𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗚𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘:

There has been an important update today regarding the proposed reorganisation of local government in West Sussex.

The Government has now paused the process and delayed making a decision on what the future structure of local government in the county will look like. We have also seen similar proposals in other parts of the country being scrapped altogether.

If the plans for West Sussex are eventually dropped, Arun District Council would remain on its normal four-year election cycle, meaning the next District Council elections would be due in May 2027.

There is still uncertainty over what will happen next, but whatever the final decision is, my priority remains the same making sure local residents continue to have strong local representation and that decisions affecting our communities are made as close to local people as possible.

🇬🇧A successful Reform UK Conference looking ahead

After attending Reform UK Conference in Birmingham alongside Reform members and supporters from Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and across West Sussex, I came away feeling very positive about the direction the party is taking.

One of the strongest themes was Reform’s first 100 days in government, with clear commitments being attached to named senior figures.

➡️Richard Tice pledged to cut average household energy bills by £250.

➡️Robert Jenrick pledged to raise the tax-free personal allowance to £15,000.

➡️Suella Braverman pledged to lift the cap on medical school places to train more home-grown doctors.

➡️ Zia Yusuf set out Reform’s commitment to stop the small boats within the first 100 days.

Richard Tice, Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman also said they would resign if they failed to meet their respective commitments, while Nigel Farage has made clear that ministers responsible for these targets will be expected to deliver.

The conference wasn’t only about Westminster either. Local government was also an important part of the conversations, including councils, devolution, housing, transport and the pressures facing communities across the country.

That matters here in Bognor Regis and across West Sussex.

Energy bills, tax, housing, crime, transport and pressure on public services all have a direct impact on local residents, and decisions made nationally inevitably affect what happens locally.

In my council roles, I’ll continue focusing on the issues that matter locally listening to residents, raising concerns with the relevant authorities and representing residents of Marine Ward at District Council and Bognor West & Aldwick at County Council.

It was great to see such a strong Reform presence in Birmingham, including members and supporters from our part of West Sussex, including Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

There is plenty of work ahead, but I left conference feeling positive about the direction Reform UK is taking and the plans being put forward for the country. 🇬🇧

I’m pleased to see confirmation that water quality has now returned to an excellent standard, but that shouldn’t mean the original incident is simply forgotten.

Arun District Council has reported that Southern Water attributed the discharge of untreated sewage into our local coastal waters to a faulty valve.

The incident is extremely concerning.

Residents deserve clear answers about how this happened, how long the discharge continued, the scale of the release and, most importantly, what measures are now being put in place to prevent it happening again.

Although this incident was reported in the Littlehampton and Climping area and at the mouth of the River Arun, protecting the quality of our coastal waters is an issue that matters to communities across the whole Arun district.

Our coastline is an incredibly important environmental and recreational asset, and residents and visitors should be able to have confidence that it is being properly protected.

I welcome the precautionary action taken while testing was carried out and the fact that the water quality has now returned to an excellent standard, but I believe Southern Water should provide full transparency about what went wrong and what action will follow.

🚨 UPDATE: we can confirm that following testing, Southern Water has advised that the water quality has returned to excellent and we will be updating the signage on the beach accordingly.

📢 UPDATE: we have been informed by Southern Water that a faulty valve is the reason for the release.

This morning we were notified by Southern Water of a discharge of untreated sewage into the sea 5km off the coast of Littlehampton and Climping as well as at the mouth of the River Arun. We are adopting a precautionary approach and are putting up signs at the beach advising against bathing in the sea and suggest that people and dogs do not go into the sea to swim or paddle. Please monitor beach signs for updates.
