Dear Senator Cruz,
On behalf of the Kulmiye Unity and Development Party and the people of the Republic of Somaliland, I extend our deepest gratitude for your principled letter to President Donald J.
Trump, urging the United States to formally recognize Somaliland.
Your bold leadership cuts through decades of diplomatic gridlock by placing strategic clarity above stale bureaucratic inertia. Recognition of Somaliland is far more than a symbolic gesture, it is a clear-eyed decision rooted in shared interests and hard realities. It rewards stability, democracy, and reliable partnership at a time when the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea are at the center of global security and economic competition.
For over three decades, Somaliland has proven itself to be a functioning democracy with peaceful transfers of power, accountable governance and steadfast commitment to the rule of law. At the same time, we have shouldered responsibilities that serve global interests: ensuring maritime security along the Gulf of Aden, cooperating in counter terrorism, and contributing to the safe flow of international trade through one of the world's most vital shipping lanes.
These are not promise for the future; they are realities Somaliland has already delivered on.
U.S. recognition would deepen cooperation on three urgent priorities: safeguarding the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, expanding lawful trade and economic integration across the Horn of.
Africa, and anchoring constructive regional cooperation. It would also affirm Somaliland's role as a partner in defending open markets and resisting coercive influence, particularly at a time when authoritarian powers seek to expand their foothold in the region
In addition, Somaliland's principled willingness to partner with democratic nations demonstrates our alignment with the values of freedom, transparency, and sovereignty that the United States upholds. Such commitments underscore that Somaliland is not merely asking for recognition; we are offering a strategic alliance grounded in shared values and mutual trust.
Senator, U.S. recognition would send a powerful signal that Washington rewards reliability, democratic governance, and peaceful state-building-not instability and disorder. It would also strengthen America's hand both politically and economically in one of the most strategic regions in the world.
Please accept our profound thanks for your steadfast support and principled vision.
Somaliland stands ready to serve as a strategic anchor on the Red Sea: stable, democratic, and aligned with the enduring interests and values of the United States.
With the highest respect and warmest regards.
