""The 2017 Trade Union Congress took an historic step by unanimously passing the Climate change Motion which begins: “ Congress notes the irrefutable evidence that dangerous climate change is driving unprecedented changes to our environment…” and goes on to advocate various measures including:
• an end to the UK’s rigged energy system to bring it back into public ownership and democratic control
• a mass programme of retrofit and insulation of Britain’s homes and public buildings
• rights for workplace environmental reps
• a Just Transition strategy for workers affected by the industrial changes necessary to develop a more environmentally sustainable future for all,
• promote divestment, (in fossil fuels) and alternative reinvestment in the sustainable economy
Although Conference notes that the motion does not go far enough or include timescales it recognises it as a welcome development.
Conference reaffirms its commitment to work closely with trade unions and their members, recognises that the majority of trade union members are in trade unions which are affiliated to Labour and notes that the current Labour leadership has expressed a commitment to building a closer relationship with the trade union movement.
Conference resolves to work with the trade union movement and its political representatives to build an effective campaign in favour of a just transition to a sustainable economy and society; including higher priority for Green Party Trade Union Liaison Officers at national, regional and local party levels, with a report back to Spring conference 2018 on measures taken to do this."
