At 17, while everyone else was heading off to university, Ashley Vince made a different call: he picked up a trowel and started as a site laborer.

He wanted a real trade, hands-on freedom, and a tangible skill. Fast-forward 17 years, and that choice paid off.

When Ashley launched AV Plastering & Damp Proofing to build a better future for his family, the response was immediate, he was fully booked in just two weeks.

How do you grow a trade business that fast?

Flawless Professionalism: Showing up on time, respecting the property, and leaving every job spotless.

Mastering the Craft: Nearly two decades in, Ashley still hits the books. By completing advanced Property Care Association (PCA) training and researching manufacturer specs directly, he solves complex damp issues that leave others stumped.

A Bulletproof Reputation: High standards turn into glowing reviews. While word-of-mouth brings in 30% of his work, Checkatrade powers the remaining 70%—connecting homeowners directly with top-tier craftsmanship.

Proof that when you combine a relentless work ethic with non-stop upskilling, success isn't just luck. It's guaranteed.

🏡 Trade Spotlight: The Personal Journey of Glen Bungay & Future Refurbishments ✨

What transforms a business from a local trade into a national success story? For Glen Bungay, the answer lies in family partnership, long-term consistency, and a profound commitment to giving back.

Glen has been a proud Checkatrade member for over 15 years. Alongside his son, Russell, he runs Future Refurbishments—a company they built from the ground up over 13 years ago. Based on the South Coast but operating nationwide, the business has grown into a trusted name across the retail, office, and commercial sectors.

But for Glen, success isn't just measured by the scope of their projects—it's measured by the strength of their community support:

🤝 Championing Mental Health in Construction: Alongside their day-to-day work, Future Refurbishments works closely with various charities. A cause especially close to their hearts is the mental health charity Mind. After completing a project fitting out their offices and a wellbeing hub in Havant, Glen and his team have been fierce advocates for mental health awareness and su***de prevention within the construction industry.

In Glen's own words: "Many of us, especially the self-employed, face mental health challenges at some point in our lives. I just want to say, you are not alone. It’s so important to talk, to reach out, and to know there is always someone willing to listen."

🏆 Award-Winning Impact: This incredible dedication to combining premium trade service with charitable outreach earned Future Refurbishments the prestigious title of Checkatrade Awards South Regional Winner as a Community Hero. For Glen and Russell, the true prize is the recognition it brings to their outstanding in-house team, their trusted subcontractors, and the shared passion they all hold for building up the communities around them.

Glen Bungay is proving that the best businesses don’t just build structures—they build hope, trust, and lasting support. 🛠️❤️

A budding electrician, ready to take the next step in his career. What would your best advice for him be?

28/09/2026

"I thought that was included."

"You said it would only be a day's work."

"That's not what we agreed."

Sound familiar? It happens when there's nothing in writing.

A signed quote isn't about distrust — it's about clarity.
It protects both of you. Here's what it should include:

— Exact scope of work (as specific as possible)
— What's excluded (just as important)
— Materials — supplied by who, at what cost
— Timeline and start date
— Payment terms and schedule
— What happens if the scope changes

Get it signed before a single tool comes out. It takes five minutes and saves hours of dispute down the line. Any customer who refuses to sign should be treated as a red flag.

From a TV repairs apprentice to building a leading AV business across London and Essex. 📺✨

Meet Anthony Neal, founder of Simply AV and the latest member featured in our Checkatrade Trade Spotlight.

Anthony’s journey in the trade started over two decades ago. Inspired by his builder father, he chose the path of self employment over university - and has never looked back. Today, Simply AV specialises in everything from high-end home cinema rooms and smart home automation to premium TV installations.

But for Anthony, it’s never just about the technology - it’s about the people.

Like the time he visited an elderly client whose TV system had been left in a mess by a previous provider. Wanting to help, Anthony repaired and reconfigured the entire system free of charge. 🛠️❤️

That commitment to professionalism, care, cleanliness, and customer service is exactly why Anthony has built such a strong reputation through word-of-mouth referrals and a long-standing partnership with Checkatrade.

We love seeing tradespeople who go above and beyond for the customers and communities they serve. 👏

Cash flow kills more trade businesses than a lack of work.

You can be fully booked and still struggle to cover bills if clients take months to pay.

Know your legal rights—and how to use them safely:Commercial Late Fees (B2B): Working for a commercial client or main contractor? Under UK law, you have an automatic right to charge statutory interest (8% + Bank of England base rate) plus fixed recovery fees on overdue bills.

Residential Clients (B2C): Statutory late fees don't automatically apply to homeowners. To charge interest or late fees on domestic jobs, you must explicitly include them in your signed quote or contract before work starts.

Suspending Work: On commercial jobs, you have a statutory right to suspend work for non-payment after giving a formal 7-day written notice. On domestic jobs, this right isn't automatic—it must be written into your contract.

Walking off site without the proper contract terms or legal notice can put you in breach of contract.

How to get paid faster:Agree on clear payment terms in writing before starting.

Invoice the day the job is done.

Automate reminders on day 6 and day 8.

Stop doing extra or follow-up work while an invoice remains overdue.

For detailed official guidance on commercial debt recovery, search "Late commercial payments" on GOV.UK.Your work is done. Getting paid shouldn't be a favor.
