For Heart Hero Denzil’s family, every cardiology appointment brings uncertainty. Following recent news that he’ll need many more appointments in the future, having support from The Coping Company, funded by Heart Heroes, has made a real difference.

Bella, you are incredible.

💙 Support doesn’t end after surgery. The Coping Company

For 20-year-old Heart Hero Bella, the months following her ASD closure were incredibly challenging. While the physical recovery continued, anxiety, panic attacks and repeated hospital visits took their toll.

Thanks to funding from Heart Heroes, Bella has been receiving art therapy through The Coping Company.

“I never thought art therapy would do anything for me, but working with clay has helped me connect with my emotions. My panic attacks have reduced, and having someone who genuinely wants to understand has lifted such a weight from my shoulders.” – Bella

Her mum, Natasha, shared how difficult it was to find psychological support once Bella became an adult.

“Once you turn 18, support becomes so limited, yet young adults with heart conditions are incredibly vulnerable. Heart Heroes and The Coping Company stepped in when no one else could. The difference in Bella’s anxiety has been remarkable, and this ongoing support is vital.”

Just finished binge-watching Best Interests on Netflix, and my heart is still recovering. 💔❤️

If you work in paediatrics or walk the complex medical/care journey with your family, this will hit every every single nerve in the best but most challenging of ways. It captures the brutal beauty of raising a child with rare medical needs...the constant advocacy, the toll marriage and family dynamic, the constant unspoken sacrifices of siblings, and the gutting heartbreak when doctor and parent opinions don't align.

Every episode was a reminder of why we do the work we do. Behind every medical record and care plan is a previous family holding onto joy, dignity, and each other. If you do choose to watch, prepare for a cathartic experience, and grab some tissues before you press play.

What’s the difference between surviving and thriving?

It’s trauma informed care.
It’s certified child life specialists.
It’s registered health play specialists.
It’s multidisciplinary collaboration.
It’s medical play. Therapeutic play.
It’s timing, it’s pacing. It’s age appropriate.

It’s preparing, teaching, showing, exploring, playing, control, answering questions, practising, rehearsing, and then doing it all over again and again until mastery, understanding, and healthy coping are unlocked.
