One family story can reveal many different migration stories - European regional mobility in Shakespeare’s Hamlet

Hamlet is a prince of Denmark, likely to become the next head of state.
Exercising a right of free movement, he studies in Wittenberg, Germany.
His friend Laertes does likewise but studies in Paris.
The King of Norway’s son, Fortinbras, skips education, setting off instead to invade Poland and annex territory.
Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, exiles Hamlet for killing Laertes’s father Polonius and decides to send him to England, considering it a suitable place for him to be killed.
Fortinbras, bored of the idea of a little patch of ground in Poland changes his plans and conquers Denmark instead.
Almost everyone dies (some are forcibly displaced no doubt). The play ends.
