I was asked yesterday: "Why is the Remembrance Service held at St Peter’s rather than Christ Church?"
It’s a good question so I asked a gentleman who knows ! Thank you, John.
Although the different layouts can give another impression, St Peter’s actually accommodates more people than Christ Church.
There are practical reasons too. An alternative parade route to Christ Church was considered a few years ago, but the current arrangements work better for:
• Safe assembly near the Scout Hut, with minimal disruption to traffic.
• The return march, salute and dispersal.
• Nearby parking for the band and its heavy instruments.
• Refreshments after the parade at the MMC.
St Peter’s also has a longstanding connection with local remembrance. Before the First World War, the Volunteers and later the Territorials paraded there. During the war, its gates became a village information point for news of casualties and losses.
Castle Hill has also played an important part in remembrance over the years. While some would welcome a return there, access is difficult for many people.
Using St Peter’s brings together capacity, practical parade arrangements and a meaningful link with the village’s history of remembrance.
