The 28 October Budget means mayors keep a share of business rates from April 2027 and a share of income tax from 2028–29. Kettering has no mayor, and Northamptonshire isn’t among the 10 new devolution deals. The money shouldn’t depend on whether you have a mayor.

A tax rate meant for high earners now reaches teachers, nurses and police officers. House of Commons Library estimates put 40,000 more people across the East Midlands in the 40p rate in 2026/27 because the thresholds were frozen again, and 60,000 more paying income tax at all. The Liberal Democrats would raise the 40p threshold to £56,000 and the tax-free allowance to £15,000.

244 people in Kettering work in farming, according to the last Census. The farmland around Kettering grows food for all of us.

On 21 October, our MP Rosie Wrighting voted against the Commons motion ‘Support for British farmers’. It called on the Government to guarantee funding for every eligible farmer shut out of this year’s Sustainable Farming Incentive, scrap the family farm tax, and put an extra £1 billion a year into the schemes that pay farmers to look after nature.

The motion fell by 279 votes to 57. Kettering’s farmers deserve an MP who backs them.

That's four stories for Black History Month – James Chappell, Walter Tull, Anita Neil and Michael Prescod. Four lives, three and a half centuries, one county. There are more. If there's someone from Kettering whose story should be told next October, tell us in the comments. ✊🏾

Happy Northamptonshire Day! 🌹 Today is St Crispin’s Day – the patron saint of shoemakers, and a fitting day for a county built on boots and shoes. Here’s to Kettering’s shoemaking heritage, to the Rose of the Shires, and to everyone who makes our town such a great place to live. 💛❤️

Many people only find out they have ADHD as adults — after years of being told to try harder. Liberal Democrats would cut waits for assessment, open walk-in mental health hubs for young people, and offer mental health check-ups at key points in life. And we’d make a pre-16 diagnosis of ADHD count towards Disabled Students’ Allowance, so no one has to prove it twice.

Michael Prescod was born in Barbados in 1938, came to Britain at 19 and served in the army before he made Wellingborough his home in 1976. He founded the Wellingborough African Caribbean Association in 1980, helped set up the Victoria Centre, and spent 15 years as a councillor. In 1998 he became Wellingborough's first Black mayor, and in 2001 he was appointed MBE for services to the community. He died in 2010. Prescod Close, off Irthlingborough Road, carries his name – and so does a good deal of what makes Wellingborough work.

Kettering General is our town’s hospital, and NHS England’s new figures put the bill to fix its buildings at £55 million.

The trust says its women’s and children’s unit has RAAC concrete, and that the next steps on its rebuild have been pushed back to 2029/30. That’s a long wait for a building that needs work now. Liberal Democrats want a crumbling hospitals taskforce and delayed hospital projects brought forward.

On this day in 1968, an 18-year-old from Wellingborough ran the first leg of the Olympic 4×100m relay final in Mexico City. Anita Neil was the first Black woman to represent Great Britain at the Olympics. She trained in her spare time around a job as a machinist in a clothing factory. She went on to win European bronze in 1969 and Commonwealth silver in 1970, and ran a second Olympics in Munich in 1972 before the money ran out at 23. Wellingborough made her its first Honorary Freewoman in 2022, and in 2024 she was appointed MBE for services to athletics. Wellingborough's own – and this county's.

44% of homes with an energy certificate in the Kettering constituency are rated D or worse — the highest share of the three constituencies in North Northamptonshire.

Liberal Democrats would set up an Energy Security Bank, offering low-cost loans of up to £20,000 for households and £50,000 for small businesses to insulate, fit solar panels or install a heat pump. It would be paid for by a windfall tax on the big banks’ profits from quantitative easing — not by bill payers.
