Over the weekend I had the pleasure of taking part in a 24 hr Carp fishing competition on the canal and I’ve got to say it was great fun and I’m really pleased to see the hard work that the Ulverston Angling Association is putting in to get the canal back to a place that can be enjoyed in more and more locations. They are clearing the w**d that is choking the canal where they can and opening more and more pegs. The weather was wild and wet during Saturday, but overnight it was calm and clear and so tranquil down there. I didn’t catch anything, but half the time it’s more about just sitting quietly and taking in the wonderful surroundings, than catching a fish. Congratulations to all the competitors that did catch and I’ll be back for the competitions in 2027!!

Good news about the Dragley beck bridge finally getting replaced. I’m also really happy about the Decorative Rails that were championed by Clr Jackie Drake and commissioned by UTC. It’s going to look fantastic and I can’t wait to see what it looks like as a complete structure

* UPDATE ON DRAGLEY BECK FOOTBRIDGE*

Westmorland and Furness Council are scheduled to commence work on site w/c 14th September, with all in-river works being undertaken within the governed river working window.

The deck slab, complete with the CB Arts architectural railings, will then be lifted into position in October once fabrication is complete. The railings will then be connected to the precast slab.

Ulverston Town Council have commissioned the architectural railings with CB Arts which will depict the life of Sir John Barrow, and are a real work of art. The design is fantastic and we can't wait to see it completed. Here is a sneak preview of the design!

I was immensely proud and privileged to be invited by our Mayor, Clr Shirley Anne Wilson to award the Freedom of the Town certificates to His Majesty’s Royal Marines Band Service Scotland and Plymouth last night. The Royal Marines Band have been outstanding in their support of Ulverston Victoria High School band since first playing with them in 2005. In recognition of this I nominated the Marines, along with the Inspirational Richard Butler for Freedom of the town at the end of my tenure as Mayor last year and this was unanimously approved by Ulverston town council. Richard collected his award in October, and last night I was able to hand over the award to Lt Col Steve Green, Captain Griffin and Captain Miller during another fantastic concert with UVHS band.

Over the weekend I used Buxton Place car park and paid for 1 hour via the Pay By Phone App. I didn’t notice at the time as I was in a bit of a rush, but I was charged £3.40 for 1 hour. The correct price should be 90p as shown on the meter. When I noticed the error I contacted parking control at W&F to notify them and to ask for a refund. I was contacted today and they have noted the error and will be correcting the situation. They will be sending a refund which is appreciated.
I asked about the other people that I’m sure will have been overcharged and if they would get automatic refunds if they paid online, but I was told that they would need to contact W&F parking control to make a claim. If you have been overcharged you need to contact
