We can bring forward all the motions we want to the floor of the Assembly, but the reality remains the same: Michelle OāNeill will continue to represent Northern Ireland as First Minister, even if she is found guilty of breaking the law.
Yet the power to hold her to account lies with the unionist parties.
Not through pointless motions, but through action: removing her from her position as First Minister.
The solution is as simple as it is effective.
The Deputy First Minister resigns, and in doing so, the First Minister automatically loses her position too.
The Executive Ministers remain in place. The Assembly continues its work. The scrutiny committees continue scrutinising the Bills currently progressing through Stormont.
The work of government continues. The only difference is that Michelle OāNeill can no longer represent Northern Ireland as First Minister, nationally or internationally.
There is no point blaming the Chief Constable or the Secretary of State, this sits with those public representatives who broke the law.
If unionist parties are serious about accountability, the mechanism is there. The question is whether they have the political will to use it.
