HAY-ON-WYE PUBLIC TOILETS TO REOPEN FOLLOWING MAJOR REFURBISHMENT
Hay Town Council is pleased to announce that the newly refurbished Oxford Road public toilets have reopened today, Saturday 24 October, following an extensive programme of improvements.
The refurbishment has transformed the facilities, providing a cleaner, brighter and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors to Hay-on-Wye.
The works have included new cubicles, modern sanitary facilities, improved lighting, contactless payment options and a newly designed, fully accessible toilet facility.
Particular attention has been given to ensuring the refurbished facilities are durable, hygienic and easy to maintain. Water-saving fixtures and sensor-operated lighting have also been installed to reduce water and energy consumption, helping to minimise environmental impact and ongoing running costs. These practical improvements will help ensure the facilities serve the town efficiently and sustainably for years to come.
As a busy market town welcoming visitors throughout the year, Hay-on-Wye relies on good-quality public facilities. The refurbishment represents an important investment in the town's infrastructure, ensuring the toilets are better equipped to meet the needs of residents and visitors alike.
The project has been made possible through grant funding of £83k from the Pride in Place programme, with Hay Town Council funding the remainder of the project.
A spokesperson for Hay Town Council said:
“Public toilets are an essential facility for any town, particularly one that welcomes as many visitors as Hay. We are very pleased to have been able to carry out these much-needed improvements and hope the refurbished facilities will serve the town well for many years to come.”
Another spokesperson for Hay Town Council said:
“As a busy market town and the World’s first book town we welcome 1 million visitors throughout the year, with such high numbers Hay-on-Wye needs reliable and good-quality facilities.”
Hay Town Council would like to thank Gilbert Construction and Wye Valley Plumbing for their work in delivering the refurbishment, and Powys County Council, particularly the officers involved in administering and supporting the grant funding, plus our town councillors who have worked tirelessly to make this project happen.
The Council would also like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience and understanding during the temporary closure.
The refurbished Oxford Road public toilets are now open to the public.

Christmas came early for Hay Town Councillors and members of Light Up Hay group.
Sunday morning and they got together to start the safety check of Hay’s Christmas lights, which will be going up in mid-November.
Testing the lights is a repetitive task with 20 boxes containing up to 12 strings of lights in each, taking approximately 30 minutes to check per box. The process involves PAT testing the 240v connections, checking all the bulbs work, a visual inspection of the wiring, labelling each item and repacking everything.
We are so lucky to have a committed group of volunteers who come together to make Hay a safer place, see you all at the big switch on, 27th November

🚻 Oxford Road Toilets – Update

Unfortunately, the disabled toilet at Oxford Road has been vandalised yet again. On this occasion, the toilet cistern has been cracked beyond repair, meaning we have had no choice but to close the facility.

The remaining single toilet will be open this Thursday for market visitors, but from Friday morning all toilets at Oxford Road will be closed while the refurbishment works continue.

We had hoped to keep the DDA-compliant/unisex toilet open for longer, but by closing it slightly earlier than planned we hope this will help the works progress more efficiently and ultimately save time.

The good news is that the refurbishment remains on track, with the main toilets expected to reopen in approximately two weeks. 🎉

In the meantime, public toilets are available next to the Clock Tower, including a DDA-compliant toilet. These facilities accept both cash and card payments.

We appreciate everyone's patience while the work is completed and are incredibly disappointed that further vandalism has caused additional disruption.

📣 HEAR YE, HEAR YE! Could you be the voice of Hay? 📣

Hay Town Council is looking for a fluent Welsh-speaking Town Crier to help us make sure the traditional cry of “Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!” can be heard in both Welsh and English.

We’re looking for someone who is confident, enthusiastic and happy to represent Hay at civic occasions, community events and celebrations throughout the year.

You don’t need to have been a Town Crier before — enthusiasm, a strong voice and a willingness to get involved are far more important!

🏰 Represent Hay-on-Wye

🎩 And, of course, look rather splendid while doing it!

Interested, or know someone who might be perfect for the role?

Please get in touch with Hay Town Council for more information.

And please share this post — our next Town Crier could be out there waiting to be heard!

We’re inviting local charities and community groups to join the Hay lights switch-on on 27th November by running a self organised activity-based stall. It could be a simple festive game, craft, lucky dip, quiz or hands-on activity, with the chance to raise awareness and funds for your group. Would you be interested in taking part?

Stall ideas include Christmas craft table, decorate-a-tree-or-star activity, festive prize game, charity tombola or “guess the sweets” jar.

🌺 Hay Town Council Supports the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

Hay Town Council is proud to support the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal through the purchase of new lamp-post poppies.

The poppies will be displayed throughout Hay in the lead-up to Remembrance Sunday, helping the town honour those who served and sacrificed in the Armed Forces. They will also provide a visible show of support for the Royal British Legion and its vital work with serving personnel, veterans and their families.

A spokesperson for Hay Town Council said:

“We are proud to support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and to help ensure that remembrance remains visible throughout our town. The new lamp-post poppies are a simple but meaningful way for our community to honour all those who have served.”

The council encourages residents and visitors to support the Poppy Appeal and join the town’s Remembrance commemorations.

🎉 OXFORD ROAD PUBLIC TOILETS – RENOVATION WORK STARTS TUESDAY! 🎉
We’re delighted to announce that the long-awaited renovation of the Oxford Road Public Toilets will begin on Tuesday 1 September.
This is a significant investment in facilities for residents, businesses and visitors to Hay-on-Wye, and will see the toilet block extensively refurbished and improved.
🚧 How will the work be phased?
Phase 1:
The main Ladies’ and Gents’ toilets will be closed while the first phase of renovation work takes place.
However, toilet facilities will remain available, with the unisex and accessible toilet facilities at the rear of the building remaining OPEN.
Phase 2:
Once Phase 1 is complete, the main Ladies’ and Gents’ toilets will REOPEN.
Work will then move to the rear facilities, with the accessible toilet and 24-hour toilet temporarily closed for renovation.
This phased approach means that public toilet facilities will continue to be available throughout the works.
🛍️ ALL SHOPS & BUSINESSES ARE OPEN AS USUAL
The Oxford Road Craft Centre and surrounding businesses remain fully open and accessible throughout the works. Please continue to visit, shop and support our fantastic local businesses while the improvements are underway.
📅 When will the work be finished?
The programme begins on Tuesday 1 September, with the intention of completing the entire renovation by the October half-term.
There will inevitably be a little disruption while such a substantial improvement is carried out, and we would like to thank residents, visitors and neighbouring businesses for their patience and understanding.
After a great deal of work behind the scenes, we’re incredibly pleased to finally see this project getting underway and look forward to unveiling much-improved public toilet facilities for Hay-on-Wye this autumn. 🚻✨

The session is free and is part of a Powys wide programme that has been running for over three years. To date over 400 people across Mid Wales have attended the session and have become 'Cancer Champions'.
Becoming a Cancer Champion simply means individuals have the skills and knowledge to have a conversation about the importance of early reporting of possible signs and symptoms and uptake of screening invitations when the opportunity arises.
The session covers an introduction to cancer, why early diagnosis can make a difference, the screening programmes, prostate cancer, signposting for cancer support and managing tricky conversations.
Once trained Cancer Champions do as much or as little as they want and are supported by me as the Powys Cancer Champion Coordinator. Further opportunities for additional training and to feedback insights from the community are available but are optional
