It also includes details on the final litter pick of 2026, Speed Watch volunteer opportunities and the new toddler swings now in place at Holymead Playground.

You’ll find a profile on Councillor Andrew Griffin, seasonal nature notes and a roundup of local community activities.

We hope you enjoy this read while keeping in touch with what’s happening across Holybrook.

Settling Into September – Supporting Our Community

With schools now back in session and the weather beginning to turn, this is a good moment for the community to ease into the new season and make the most of what early autumn offers.

If you’re finding your rhythm again after the summer break or looking for local activities, there’s plenty happening across Holybrook and surrounding areas.

📚 Events at Theale Library

Theale Library has a range of activities and sessions coming up for all ages - including craft events, story times, and community drop‑ins. It’s a welcoming space to stay engaged as the evenings draw in. Full details are available directly from the library or on the West Berkshire Libraries website: https://bit.ly/4Afbg0M

🚶 Enjoy local countryside walks and seasonal activities

West Berkshire Countryside Society (WBCS) offers ideas for walks, nature activities, and ways to enjoy our green spaces safely as the weather cools. They highlight local habitats, wildlife, and accessible routes across the district - helpful for older residents, carers supporting someone with mobility needs, or families planning low‑cost weekend outings. Visit their website to see a full diary of walks from October till the end of the year: http://www.westberkscountryside.org/

🌦 Preparing for changing weather

As temperatures shift, a few small steps can help everyone stay comfortable and safe:

✓ Light layers for cooler mornings

✓ Waterproofs or umbrellas for sudden showers

✓ A refillable water bottle for warmer afternoons

✓ Checking in on older neighbours who may find the change in season more challenging

Early autumn is a lovely time to enjoy Holybrook’s green spaces, reconnect with routines, and make use of the brilliant local resources available to us.

And don't forget...

Free Soil Conditioner Giveaway- Next Weekend!

West Berkshire residents can collect free soil conditioner as the autumn planting season takes root.

Collection will be at the Padworth Integrated Waste Management Facility (RG7 4JF) on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, 10am - 4pm.

September is a great time for autumn planting in the UK, and this free, nutrient‑rich soil conditioner is ideal for refreshing beds, preparing borders, and improving soil ahead of winter.

What to bring

• Proof of address (ID card or recent utility bill)
• Your own bags or containers – conditioner is provided loose
• Please avoid black bin liners as they tear easily and slow down queues

On the day

• No booking required
• Supplies restocked throughout the day
• Expect queues at busy times
• Please take a reasonable amount so all residents can benefit
• Household vehicles only – no commercial vehicles
• Residents must load materials themselves
• Staff must be treated respectfully at all times

Visiting the nearby Household Waste Recycling Centre too?

You’ll still need to book an appointment separately.
