The season is over. Richborough Roman Fort closes it's gate for Winter. A huge thanks to all our visitors, volunteers and visitor assistants who have made this year so memorable. Richborough will reopen on March 20th 2027. Valete! Valete! Valete! (for now...!)

The moon made a rather grand appearance above Richborough this morning. The Romans would have found this highly significant. For them, the moon was the embodiment of the goddess Luna — often depicted driving a blazing chariot across the night sky. To see Her in the daytime would suggest an approaching change or renewal in the cycle of earthly life.
As Richborough Roman Fort closes for the winter perhaps Luna is preparing us for our long sleep. The good news is we don't close until November 1st so there's still time to visit our extraordinary site.

High and low: On the ground Richborough is guarded by the mighty Claudian Gate but today we're also protected high in the sky by a Royal Air Force Chinook.
The Romans would have been astonished to see such a flying beast — just as we were!

Did you know that all roads once led from Richborough Roman Fort? Today we call it Watling Street and it once stretched as far north as Wroxeter. Along the way the Roman's could stop off in the heart of the City of London. Fragments of the once mightly highway survive around St Paul's Cathedral — and on our doorstep too!

As Richborough Roman Fort stands proud upon a great chalk escarpment looking out over the east Kent countryside we're an ideal place to watch billowing cloud formations moving across the sky!
Whether you're an artist, a scientist or dreamer, cloud-spotting can be an utterly fascinating past time. (Oh, it's called Nephology, by the way!)

Richborough Roman Fort has been the subject of drawings and engravings since at least the 17th Century. This watercolour is the latest artistic impression of the site and the work of Royal Academician Bob and Roberta Smith RA (Patrick Brill). Now in a private collection the painting shows bands of summer colour framing our great western wall. Beautiful.

As we mark and celebrate Black History Month it's affirming to note that as far back as the 3rd century CE there is evidence of African people living in Roman Britain. Ethiopian troops were based as far north as Hadrian's Wall.
As a principal conduit to the province of Britannia, Richborough Roman Fort and port would have welcomed all to our island — as we proudly continue to do so today.

Black histories are a vital part of England’s story, reaching back many centuries. There is evidence of African people in Roman Britain as far back as the 3rd century AD, and black communities have been present since at least 1500.
