Nationally over the last ten years the availability of on call fire fighters has dropped by 26 percent, this places challenges on services to provide essential cover and additional pressure on crew members.
Can you make a difference in our area? We are still recruiting at Settle Fire Station, if you have ever considered this role we would love to hear from you.

Monday night is drill night at Settle Fire Station, tonight was an Argocat familiarisation session, our all terrain vehicle which we use at moorland fires and fires in the open. We looked at vehicle control and operation of the onboard pump and twin-head water lance. In operation we drive the Argocat in full fire kit, which makes for hot work in these conditions!

For the next two weeks fourteen people from across North Yorkshire will be attending a Safe to Ride course at our regional training centre in Easingwold and we are particularly excited as one of them is a new recruit at Settle Station. This intensive course covers all the basic skills required to enable new recruits to operate safely while at incidents and act as operational fire crew. Good luck to everyone on the course!

Settle crew attended an incident yesterday to assist Skipton Fire Station in providing access and damping down operations to extinguish a fire in the open. As the argocat only requires two Fire Fighters to operate we were able to help. However there have been a number of incidents over the past few weeks in our area where due to critically low staffing levels we have been unable to turn out our main appliance.
This means that neighbouring stations such as Skipton, Bentham and Grassington have had to turn out on our behalf. This is great teamwork but it does increase our response times which we want to maintain at a minimum for the benefit of our community.
If you can help Settle Station by becoming an On Call Fire Fighter do consider joining us. We have a range of flexible contracts meaning commitment can be as much or as little as you can manage. It’s a great way to learn new skills, earn a little extra money and most importantly make a real difference to our community.
Interested? There is an online event tomorrow at 7pm outlining the role and providing an opportunity to ask any questions you may have, there’s a link on this post or alternatively come and speak to us any Monday evening from 7pm.

Settle crew took the Argocat on a call out yesterday to a moorland fire in Swaledale working with crews from Reeth, Richmond, Hawes and Leyburn. While enjoying this settled period of dry sunny weather please be aware that the uplands are tinder dry and the risk of wild fire is high.

It’s been a busy few weeks at Settle Fire Station starting with the arrival of a new piece of equipment for the station. The Argocat is an all terrain vehicle equipped with fire fighting equipment and a 200 litre water tank. Designed for moorland and wildfires it will be maintained and crewed as an area resource.
To support its deployment crews from Settle, Bentham and Kirbymoorside attended a two day wild fire training course at our regional training centre and driver training is scheduled for the next few weeks. Crew have also attended road traffic collision and water rescue updates as part of our ongoing training.
