🚨 Labour’s attack on local democracy!

From 31 October, new national planning rules will restrict which applications go before planning committees and remove councillors’ call-in powers.

What does this mean for Snodland?

Imagine a developer proposes 35 houses in our community, and residents are concerned about traffic, pressure on local services and the impact on the neighbourhood.

🔹 Under the current system: You can raise your concerns with your ward councillor, who can request that the application is called in for a decision by elected councillors.

🔹 From 31 October: You can still submit objections, but your ward councillor will no longer have the power to independently call in an application. Referral to committee will depend on the new national rules and the required approvals.

The result? More planning decisions could be made by officers rather than elected councillors who are directly accountable to local residents.

Residents deserve a voice. Local communities deserve a say. And elected representatives must be able to hold planning decisions to account.

More power concentrated in Westminster, fewer opportunities for local scrutiny. Is this really the direction Labour wants local democracy to take?

Cllr Luke Chapman was delighted to attend this year’s TMBC Community Awards evening, celebrating the hard work, dedication and generosity of residents from across the Borough.

Luke was particularly pleased to see outstanding contributions from the Snodland community recognised, with Chris and Linda Howick and Cycle Works among those celebrated for the difference they make locally.

👏 Chris and Linda Howick have quietly dedicated almost half a century to our community, giving their time, skills and energy to support local people. Their contribution goes far beyond the events they have organised, the money they have raised and the history they have preserved. Their commitment has touched generations of residents and helped make Snodland the wonderful community it is today.

🚲 Cycle Works is working towards a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable future, where every young person has access to a bicycle, the skills to maintain it and the confidence to ride for transport, health and discovery. They also do fantastic work encouraging more girls and women to get involved in cycling.

It was a pleasure to celebrate the people and organisations who go above and beyond for our community.

Thank you for everything you do for Snodland. Your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed! 👏❤️

Thank you, Chris and Linda, for everything you do for our community. Your hard work and dedication haven’t gone unnoticed. You both deserve this recognition! 👏🏆

Happy Trafalgar Day! 🇬🇧⚓

Remembering the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and celebrating Britain’s proud naval heritage.

Cllr Luke Chapman says:

Last night, I was proud to second a motion at Full Council demanding transparency over the cost of Local Government Reorganisation.

Taxpayers deserve answers, not excuses. This is a clear message to the Government: stop cocking it up!

Unfortunately, the opposition, including Snodland Labour, voted against the motion.

I’ll continue to stand up for local taxpayers, demand accountability and fight for transparency over how public money is spent. 💙
