THE OUIJA BOARD CURSE: 512 SCHOOLGIRLS STRUCK BY MYSTERIOUS ILLNESS
Mexico, 2006 to 2007 A schoolgirl was expelled for using a Ouija board. What followed became one of the strangest medical investigations in the country’s history.
At a Catholic boarding school near Mexico City, hundreds of teenage girls began suffering from headaches, nausea, severe leg pain and, in some cases, an inability to walk without assistance.
According to a later psychiatric investigation, a 15 year old student, identified under the pseudonym María, had used a Ouija board during a school basketball tournament.
She reportedly asked for her friend’s team to win. When other pupils discovered what had happened, María was accused of using supernatural means and was expelled.
Before leaving, she allegedly warned that the girls responsible would become ill in their legs and lose the ability to walk.
Over the following months, the illness spread through the school. By 2007, hundreds of students were affected. Some were taken to hospital and frightened parents began removing their daughters.
Rumours spread that María had placed a curse on the pupils. According to the published investigation, religious rituals and exorcisms were among the responses attempted.
Mexican psychiatrist Nashyiela Loa Zavala later investigated the outbreak. Her research recorded 512 affected schoolgirls, while contemporary reports placed the number at around 600.
Medical authorities identified the outbreak as mass psychogenic illness, where genuine physical symptoms can spread through psychological and social influences.
The findings were published in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis in 2010.
No supernatural cause was established.
But the case remains one of the strangest documented incidents ever linked to a Ouija board.
Psychological phenomenon, or do you think something else happened inside that school?
