Councillor Bill Harper: I was honoured to chair a session at the Newport Dementia Summit, bringing together some wonderful people committed to improving the lives of those living with dementia and their families.

My thanks to Mark Pritchard MP for organising the summit and to our excellent speakers, Dr Nick Tindall, Katie Foster and Hilary Griffin. Dr Stefan Waldendorf, PCN, Emma Clutton Tand W , Isla Lewis, national Lead dementia care.

But the conversation must not stop here.

I would encourage everyone in Newport to play their part. Whether as a business, organisation, community group or individual, let’s make Newport a truly dementia-friendly town. I certainly will.

Small acts of understanding can make a huge difference.

“𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭’𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 ‘𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭’ 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.

The event, a joint initiative with Newport Cottage Care , came out of a recent health strategy meeting with Newport Town Council and my visit to Newport Cottage Care Centre earlier this year to discuss local health needs.

I am very grateful to everyone who has made this important summit come together - the turnout was excellent and the contributions very moving and meaningful.

Sharing best practice and experiences is just the first step in what I hope will spread out to other parts of the borough and county. I am grateful to everyone who made the summit such a great success.

Dementia impacts on people throughout The Wrekin constituency and I hope today's event will generate more understanding and support for people suffering with the disease, and more respite for carers and family members.

Many reports of parking restricting access to Hampton Drive received. Some have said how difficult it is for both drivers and pedestrians to safely access and cross.

Newport Shropshire Town Council debated a request from Telford & Wrekin Council this week to fly their new Telford flag in Newport.

After some discussion, the answer was an pretty unequivocal "no".

Cllr Tim Nelson summed up the situation: "This is Newport, we are not Telford".

Councillor Tim Nelson said “I think it is outrageous to ask Newport Town Council to fly a Telford flag.”
