🍂📚 Monday Musings

A rainy autumn day, a brand-new book from the library and nowhere else to be. Bliss! 🍁

But what makes a reading session perfect for you? We're talking the little things, the weird things and the wonderfully specific things that make all the difference.

Do you need a particular mug? A specific snack-to-page-turning ratio? A cat sitting directly on the book? Or do you have a reading ritual that's a little bit quirky? 👀

We want to hear the details! What makes your reading time just right? 👇

Bring History Home with Cornwall Libraries 🌊📚

When we explore Cornwall's heritage, we rightfully look to our mining roots, fishing villages, and maritime towns. But our local archives also contain remarkable global stories that are deeply woven right into our communities:

🎻 In Truro: Joseph Emidy, a talented African violinist, became one of Cornwall’s most celebrated 19th-century musicians and composers.
⚓ In Falmouth: John Alice found sanctuary here in the 1800s, building a life and family within the maritime community.
📜 In Penryn: Parish archives record the everyday lives of Black residents like Maria Weymouth dating back centuries.

Learning about our past is about discovering the complete, rich picture of where we live.

This black history month, we are highlighting three beautifully illustrated children's books that trace the long, diverse history of Britain:

📖 Black and British: An Illustrated History for Young Readers by David Olusoga
📖 Bright Stars of Black British History by J.T. Williams
📖 Brilliant Black British History by Atinuke

These titles are all available to borrow through Cornwall Libraries. Reserve your copies today through our online catalogue or visit your local library!

In this video, Tom Palmer talks about his books published by Barrington Stoke and how features such as dyslexia-friendly fonts can help make reading more accessible. He also shares his love of audiobooks through BorrowBox. Did you know? You can find our dyslexia-friendly books throughout the children's section. Just look for the silver sticker on the spine. By shelving them alongside our other children's books, we're helping every child discover stories in a welcoming and inclusive way.

💚 This World Mental Health Day, we're sharing the real experiences of library users.

"Going to the library during difficult times has been an invaluable experience. Sometimes it was the only calm, safe place and the only human contact I had.
The online audiobook service was incredibly helpful. Hearing a human voice was sometimes the only voice I had heard for days."

🎧 Our free BorrowBox service gives library members access to thousands of audiobooks. Sometimes a story, and a voice, can make all the difference.

Not every book will be your cup of tea. But should anyone else get to decide what you can read? This Banned Books Week UK, we're sharing books that have faced challenges and exploring what we'd lose if they disappeared from our library shelves.
