EAST COAST AC DUO ENJOY A SPOOKTACULAR NIGHT OF RACING IN BELFAST!

On Friday 16th October 2026, two East Coast AC athletes made the trip to Belfast to take on the Spooktacular CCU Galloper Thompson 5k, an event with a Halloween twist, hosted by North Belfast Harriers.

The route starts and finishes at Grove Park in North Belfast, taking runners through the surrounding streets of the city. The course is a loop, with the first half mostly uphill and final part downhill, making it a good test of speed and stamina.

What makes this race particularly special is the local legend of Gordon "Galloper" Thompson, a mysterious headless horseman said to haunt the streets around Jennymount (Shore Road). The Halloween theme brings plenty of costumes, spooky entertainment and a brilliant atmosphere, especially around the finish line.

The 2026 event attracted over 700 runners, growing from last years inaugural outing. James Wilson and Matt Maguire made the journey and were ready to put their speed to the test over the 5K distance.

James produced a superb performance, racing home in a fantastic time of 18:45, comfortably breaking the 19-minute barrier.

Matt Maguire was also in excellent form, putting in a cracking run to cross the epic finish line in a brilliant 19:29, ensuring both East Coast AC athletes finished well under the 20-minute mark!

A fantastic evening of racing for the East Coast AC duo, with both athletes delivering strong performances to outrun 'the Galloper', whilst still enjoying the unique Halloween atmosphere of this popular Belfast event.

Brilliant running, James and Matt! πŸ’₯πŸ–€πŸ’›

McROBERTS SECURES SUPER TOP 10 FINISH AT SAINTFIELD!

East Coast AC athlete Trevor McRoberts was in excellent form on Sunday 18th October 2026, as he made his debut at the popular Saintfield Striders 10K.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the County Down countryside, the challenging 10K route takes runners along scenic rural roads, with rolling hills and a series of testing climbs and descents making it far from an easy course.

Undeterred by the undulating terrain, Trevor produced a superb performance, crossing the finish line in a brilliant 39:09, to claim an impressive 10th place overall!

A fantastic result on his first appearance at this well-supported event, demonstrating excellent strength and endurance over a demanding course.

Brilliant running Trevor, and congratulations on a well-earned top 10 finish! πŸ’ͺπŸ–€πŸ’›

⚫ TOPPING TAKES ON THE GR8 DUNDRUM 🟑

East Coast AC athlete Andrew Topping was back in action on Saturday 17th October 2026, taking on the ever-popular GR8 Dundrum Race.

A regular fixture in Andrew's racing calendar, the GR8 Dundrum is renowned for its stunning scenery and challenging 8.4-mile multi-terrain course. Starting and finishing in the picturesque village of Dundrum, the route takes runners along country roads, gravel trails and winding boardwalks through Murlough Nature Reserve, before tackling approximately two miles of sandy beach with the majestic Mourne Mountains providing a spectacular backdrop.

With a demanding mixture of surfaces underfoot, it is certainly no ordinary road race, making Andrew's finishing time of 1:00:54 another excellent performance, at an event he returns to year after year.

Well done, Andrew! πŸ‘πŸ–€πŸ’›

⚫ LESLEY COMPLETES 12.5K DONEGAL RACE 🟑

On Sunday 4th October 2026 East Coast AC athlete Lesley Robinson travelled to the scenic town of Ballybofey, County Donegal, to take part in the Donegal East Running - 3/4 and Half Marathon events.

This annual outing offers participants three options, a three quarter marathon, a half marathon or a 12.5k route. With a different target in mind and having raced in the 'half' before, Lesley chose the 12.5k.

Returning to competitive action and with a few notable results of late, Lesley executed her race plan to perfection, displaying fantastic patience and determination. Our athlete covered the 12.5k, alongside the River Finn, in 1:21:49 for 103rd place (overall).

WELL DONE Lesley! πŸ‘πŸ–€πŸ’›

A huge WELL DONE to East Coast AC athlete Robert Martin, who travelled to Norway on the 4th October 2026 to take part in the RunFest event, hosted by Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

The event was hosted in Jacob's home town of Sandnes, a beautiful backdrop for a race series with the abundance of stunning scenery.

Robert took on the half marathon distance and delivered a fantastic performance, crossing the finish line in a brilliant 1:26:23 and an impressive 88th place, despite the challenging windy conditions!

To top off an already memorable trip, Robert even got the opportunity to meet Jakob Ingebrigtsen himself.

⚫ JAMES TAKES ON BELFAST'S NEW 10K EVENT 🟑

On Sunday 4th October 2026, East Coast AC club captain, James Wilson travelled to Belfast to compete in the inaugural Belfast Bay 10k, hosted by Future Events.

Held in the Titanic Quarter, with flat waterfront roads, dockland views and a start and finish in one of Belfast’s most recognisable places, underneath the Harland & Wolff cranes. The early morning race was a good opportunity for athletes to test themselves over the 10k distance.

James is in the early stages of his Seville Marathon journey, so this event provided a good chance for him to put down a marker and work towards bettering that in the coming months, with his marathon fitness increasing.

In blustery conditions, James covered the 10k route in an excellent 38:52. A very well paced effort from our experienced competitor.

CONGRATULATIONS James and best wishes for your marathon training! πŸ’ͺπŸ–€πŸ’›

TOPPING TAKES NIMRA CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

On Saturday 3rd October 2026 our athlete Andrew Topping finished off the Northern Ireland mountain running season at the tough 'Buzzards Roost' event in County Down.

Promoted by Mourne Runners, the 7.5 mile race, with 3000ft of elevation gain, was a fitting way to end another fantastic season in the hills.

In relatively good conditions, Andrew raced around the route in a fantastic 1:48:17, to claim 46th position overall and 3rd in a competitive MV60 category. Another excellent result from our athlete.

We're delighted to also say that having completed six of the seven NIMRA Championship races, winning his category in two of them (Cairncastle Classic Fell Race and Flagstaff to Carlingford) and securing podium positions at the other four, Andrew is the new Northern Ireland Mountain Running Association / NIMRA MV60 Championship winner!

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Andrew, who puts in a lot of effort getting to and competing in various races around the Provence. A very deserved award.

WELL DONE and keep up the great work! πŸ‘πŸ–€πŸ’›

DORIS & JOANNE RACE AT NI & ULSTER 10K CHAMPS

Two East Coast AC athletes, Doris Kirby and Joanne Knox, made the trip to Bangor on Saturday 26 September to take part in the Seaton Classic 10K, which this year also incorporated the NI & Ulster 10K Road Championships.

Hosted by North Down AC, the popular race attracted a large field of runners from clubs across Northern Ireland and beyond. The course started outside Bangor Castle in Castle Park before taking the runners downhill towards the city centre and out along the scenic coastline, through Ballyholme to Groomsport, before turning back towards Bangor. With a testing climb around the 9K mark, there was still plenty of work to be done before the final push into the Ward Park finish line.

Doris and Joanne both put in strong performances over the 10K distance and proudly carried the club colours among a high-quality championship field.
Joanne, with a familiar smile, raced across the finish line in an excellent 1:06:21, Doris followed closely behind in a super time of 1:08:08

A big WELL DONE to Doris and Joanne, who represented our club at such a prestige event, whilst also recording fantastic individual times.

PHOENIX ENERGY BELFAST CITY HALF MARATHON

On Sunday 20th September 2026 eight East Coast AC athletes made the journey to our capital city, Belfast, to take part in Northern Ireland's largest half marathon of the year, Belfast City Half Marathon.

This year was a new record for the race with a sold out entry of 7500 runners, making it the largest half marathon in our country.

Starting and finishing on the Ormeau Embankment, the route seen the athletes run through all four corners of Belfast, north, east, west and south, much like the marathon route, helping make this an event for everyone.

Conditions on the morning were perfect, with some nice autumnal sunshine setting the scene for a fantastic day of racing.

Trevor McRoberts was the first black and yellow vest home, recording a stunning time of 1:26:04. A strong run from Trevor who is clearly getting back to great form.

Jo Harris had an outstanding day in our capital city, racing home to an impressive new personal best (PB) of 1:33:58, knocking five minutes off her previous best time over this distance.

The hard working Fiona Holley had another brilliant run, smashing her personal best time, having crossed the line in 1:35:39 and securing an excellent 5th place in her age category.

Yolande Wilson also ran an exceptional new PB, finishing in an excellent time of 1:40:25. What a way to celebrate her birthday, with a smashing time in Belfast!

Blaine Stewart was back in action, over one of his favourite distances. Blaine cruised home in an excellent 1:41:27.

Mountain man Stephen Wilson returned to the roads and had a superb run, recording a time of 1:51:58 and finishing really strongly in the closing stages.

Husband and wife duo Ian Russell and Dewi Russell ran together, crossing the atmospheric finish line in a time of 2:25:42. A consistent effort, particularly for Dewi who is preparing for the Dublin Marathon in October.

A massive WELL DONE to all of our athletes. Outstanding running after months of training and preparation for this event, you are an inspiration to your club mates.

Thank you to all of the supporters who travelled to the city, to stand and watch their team mates race the streets of Belfast. It really makes a difference when you spot a familiar face! πŸ‘

We hope that everyone has enjoyed their recovery (so far), we are all very proud of you. Congratulations!
