🎃 THE HORRORS OF THE UNION · Night 2 of 9 🎃

The Secret in the Crypt ⚰️

In 1974, Gavin McCrone, chief economic adviser at the Scottish Office, wrote a paper for UK ministers about North Sea oil.

His verdict? An independent Scotland would "tend to be in chronic surplus to a quite embarrassing degree", with a currency that "would become the hardest in Europe, with the exception perhaps of the Norwegian kroner."

The paper was kept confidential. The public only got to read it in 2005, after a Freedom of Information request.

Thirty years in the crypt. Funny what they bury when the news is good for Scotland. 🦇
