How we are building unity and not division

We read the York Press article of 12 October 2026 (“Build Unity Not Division”) with interest.

The news article itself draws on non-specific rhetoric from history without offering evidence and it doesn’t mention the work of the Student Society. We would welcome Dylan Connell contacting the University Restore Britain Team, which would help address any concern about balance.

Rachel Maskell’s call for people to come together was reflected on the day. We mingled with the crowd, including Friends from Friargate and even a representative from the press was unsure why there weren’t two separate groups at around 4.00.

Historian's would be forgiven for thinking otherwise but we know because we, unlike others, were there.

Local MP argues for banned Palestine Action to be made legal

“I wrote to the former Home Secretary twice on this matter, because many legislators here have yet to see evidence that satisfies us about the proportionality of the proscription of Palestine Action and how the Government balance that with the public’s right to protest and freedom of speech.”

EFFECT
York Restore Britain will push to move these protests off York High Street, so families can shop and walk there without being caught up in them. That would also free up police time to focus on violent crime in York.

IMPACT
Our MP says she wants evidence that satisfies her that demonstrations about foreign issues are damaging York. Here it is. The High Street is the wrong place for these marches. If Rachel won’t listen, local people will keep getting frustrated and falling foul of the law. We need that to stop.

On 17th September Mark Warters requested a memorial to Henry Nowak be approved by C*C. All faiths deal with grief in a similar way. So why is it opposed by C*C?

Quite a day in York city centre..

Young Bob with the heads of our student societies and others facilitated an event in Parliament Street opposite M&S. with lively discussion spanning abortion, immigration and wider political issues. Residents and students listened, joined in and clearly challenged each other.

Police kept a low profile and handled a difficult situation well.

Despite some heated exchanges, people engaged and, to an extent, listened

Chalking slogans took place at the end, it works to vent frustration of a stressful day, fine
we get it.

Thanks to everyone who took part. The event was recorded and will be shared. We noted only one placard so believe Bob, Cameron and others got to talk to people directly.
