From Cotton Fields to Climate Crisis – The Debt Still Owed

The images tell a story of connection and consequence. A map of Carriacou — once divided into plantations — contrasts with the grandeur of Kew Palace, where fine cotton furnished the tables and rooms of Britain’s elite. The same cotton that passed through the hands of the enslaved, picked under scorching Caribbean suns, became the fabric of luxury for an empire that gave nothing in return but pain, poverty, and displacement.

Now, centuries later, the legacy of that exploitation has shifted shape. The wealth that industrialised Britain accumulated through the forced labour of colonised peoples helped fuel the Industrial Revolution — a revolution that set in motion the very climate crisis now battering the small islands that once fed its mills. Hurricanes like Beryl and Melissa do not discriminate, yet their devastation is felt most by those who contributed least to the crisis and profited least from its origins.

It is time for industrialised nations to acknowledge this chain of consequence. Climate reparations are not charity; they are justice. The same accountability that demands remembrance of enslavement must extend to the environmental costs born from it. From the cotton fields of Carriacou to the halls of Kew, history’s threads bind us still — and they call for repair, restoration, and responsibility.

Carriacou Harmonious Heritage To preserve, honour and revitalize Carriacou’s cultural heritage by empowering knowledge exchange.

Walking through the Cairngorms near Aviemore reminded me why Scotland’s Highlands are a treasure worth protecting. Towering peaks, ancient forests, and crystal-clear streams show us how nature holds the answers to climate resilience. 🌿🌍 Researching nature-based solutions here feels like more than a project—it’s a reminder of the beauty we’re safeguarding for generations to come.

CoRE Salvaging Project Begins in Carriacou.

Last weekend marked the start of an important journey to safeguard Carriacou’s cultural heritage. After Hurricane Beryl severely damaged the Carriacou Museum in July 2024, many of our artefacts were at risk. Thanks to the guidance of ACEPR, led by Gretchen Ruiz Ramos, and the generous support of Crisis Emergency Response (CER), we have begun the careful process of salvaging what survived.

The first phase began with online training on August 26th, followed by practical sessions on August 29th and 30th. Volunteers, equipped with hard hats and high-visibility gear, put new skills into action—rescuing and protecting pieces of our history for future generations.

We extend heartfelt thanks to CER for funding this initiative, to ACEPR for their expert leadership, and to our volunteers for their commitment and courage. Together, we are ensuring that Carriacou’s story endures, even after the storm.

On Thursday 14th August, friends gathered in Reading to say farewell to Kirk — our adopted son of Carriacou. 🇧🇧➡️🇬🇩

Always seen in his red cap and known for his quiet, steady presence, Kirk may have been born in Barbados, but he made Carriacou his home — and Carriacou loved him back. ❤️

The Carriacou ‘massive’ in the UK turned out in numbers to say goodbye, with one friend carrying his catchphrase “One for the road” on a t-shirt.

Kirk was loved by many, and that love was clear in the farewell he received. Rest easy, Kirk — Carriacou will always claim you as one of our own. 🕊️

This is L’Esterre Bay, needing a collaborative effort to shine again. Sandy Island/Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area and Mcpma Carriacou I am making a call for action by asking for support with the usual materials to organise a clean-up exercise of this beautiful bay.
Also crucial is the volunteer assistance from all of us who use the beach for recreation and business.

This nature-based approach to sustainable livelihoods is attracting attention from biodiversity researchers who are monitoring resilience in response to climate change.
