The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana, played a critical role in hosting the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat in Ghana and continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness & Industry, Motai- Ghana, pursuing Ghana's economic diplomacy objectives in the context of driving Intra-Africa trade.

It was for these reasons that the National AfCFTA Coordination Office called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen the ties between the two institutions and identify areas of further collaboration.

On September 1, 2026, the AfCFTA National Coordination Office, led by Mr. Dode Seidu, together with his team, paid a courtesy call on Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Khadija Iddrisu, along with several directors of the ministry.

The visit highlighted the shared commitment to deepen collaboration and create new opportunities for Ghanaian businesses within the AfCFTA framework.

The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to advancing Ghana’s trade diplomacy and pledged close collaboration with the Coordination Office to promote Ghana’s interests. This courtesy call represents another step toward building strong partnerships that will enable Ghanaian businesses to access new markets, overcome trade barriers, and fully benefit from AfCFTA.

Private Sector Is The Driver of Ghana's Utilization

This week, the National AfCFTA Coordinator continued his courtesy calls, starting with the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), the country's oldest and largest private sector association.

The National Coordinator, Mr. Dode Seidu, and his team were received by the Chamber’s President, Mr. Stephane Miezan, Mr. Mark Badu-Aboagye, Chief Executive, and Mr. Charles Ntiri, Head of Exports.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the Coordination Office and the Chamber to support Ghanaian businesses in fully harnessing opportunities under AfCFTA.

Discussions highlighted the Chamber’s critical role in guiding enterprises on certificates of origin, facilitating access to new African markets, and advising on trade policy matters.

Both sides emphasized the importance of establishing a structured, long-term partnership rather than relying on ad hoc engagements. The discussions also highlighted joint initiatives aimed at strengthening SMEs and creating pathways for innovative enterprises and future business leaders to compete effectively across African markets.

Mr. Miezan reaffirmed GNCCI’s commitment to working closely with the Coordination Office, noting that the Chamber stands ready to provide practical support to businesses navigating AfCFTA processes. The Coordination Office, in turn, emphasized the importance of data sharing, certification, and capacity building as key areas for collaboration.

This engagement marks a significant step toward building a lasting partnership that will help Ghanaian enterprises expand, innovate, and thrive across the continent.

Mr. Seidu highlighted the important role of Customs in the AfCFTA's implementation and called for a partnership between the two agencies to advance Ghana's trade.

By working together, the Coordination Office and GRA committed to data exchange, accelerating certificate of origin approvals and addressing non-tariff barriers, as well as building capacity and promoting inclusivity for women and youth in trade.

21st August 2026, the National AfCFTA Coordinator, Mr. Dode Seidu, participated in the launch of the 2025 Annual Investment Report by the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.

The 2025 Annual Investment Report, a joint initiative led by the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority, with Bank of Ghana, Ghana Free Zones Authority, and Petroleum Commission, reported a total foreign direct investment of USD 2.62bn in 2025 from a total of 254 new projects across several sectors, including manufacturing, agro-processing, petroleum, mining, services, and general trade.

Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, at the launch of the report, stated: “Government is shifting its investment strategy from merely attracting capital inflows to ensuring that investments generate lasting economic value through increased production, stronger local enterprises, value-chain development and job creation.” The Minister added: “The true measure of investment success should go beyond the amount of capital attracted and focus on the economic impact those investments create within Ghana.”

The Hon. Minister further highlighted the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), saying Ghana’s competitive advantage would depend on the ability of businesses operating in the country to produce efficiently, meet standards, maintain quality and supply markets across the continent.

She encouraged investors expanding their operations in Ghana to establish partnerships with local suppliers, utilise local inputs where possible and invest in developing the skills of young Ghanaians.

In terms of attracting intra-Africa investments under the AfCFTA, the report highlighted that Ghana recorded over USD200 million investments in FDI from Nigeria, Morocco, and Mauritius.

Mr. Simon Madjie, Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority, indicated Ghana’s strategic initiatives to attract more intra-Africa investment utilizing the AfCFTA. He stated that the revision of Ghana’s investment code, the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority Act 2026 (Act 1173), through the removal of general investment thresholds, introducing investor grievance mechanism, and aftercare services, is in alignment with the AfCFTA Protocol on Investment, reinforcing Ghana’s role as the gateway economy for investors seeking access to Africa’s market.
