PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO VISITS GHANAIAN TROOPS IN GUINEA-BISSAU

The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), His Excellency (HE) President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accompanied by the host President and C-in-C of the Armed Force of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau (FARP), HE General (Gen) Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo have visited the Ghana Company (GHANCOY 1), serving with the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB).

The C-in-C of GAF’s historic visit to the Unit deployed at the Presidential Palace, Bissau, on Monday 15 May 2023 was part of his official 2-day state visit to Guinea-Bissau, at the invitation of President Sissoco Embalo.

The purpose of the C-in-C’s visit to the Ghanaian Contingent, was to meet with ESSMGB-GHANCOY 1 and generally assess first-hand the well-being of the troops and how the Unit has effectively carried out its mission and tasks since insertion into the operational area in June 2022.

The Combat Team Commander (CT Comd) of ESSMGB GHANCOY 1 – Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) David Korsah, warmly welcomed the Presidents and expressed his appreciation on behalf of the entire Ghanaian Contingent of ESSMGB.

In his welcome remarks to the President, the CT Comd asserted that the visit was historic and memorable for three reasons. Firstly, it affirms President Nana Akufo-Addo’s strong commitment to constitutional democracy on the continent based on his track record. Secondly, it demonstrates the confidence reposed in GAF hierarchy and personnel by the C-in-C and thirdly, it was the first time a C-in-C has visited GAF troops on an external operation in about 28 years.

Lt Col Korsah further assured President Akufo-Addo that, his Company will continue to wear the Ghana flag with pride, lift the country’s image higher and be worthy ambassadors of the Nation.

UNITED NATIONS MISSION IN SOUTH SUDAN GHANA BATTALION 10 HONOURED WITH UNITED NATIONS MEDALS

After serving for eight months, personnel of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 10 have been honoured with prestigious United Nations (UN) medals. The Commanding Officer (CO), Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Prince Tandoh and 699 all ranks were presented with their medals during a colourful parade held at the Battalion Headquarters in Bentiu on Friday 28 April 2023. The stunningly orchestrated parade featured 130 all ranks comprising 3 male contingents, an all-female contingent and the GHANBATT Band.

In attendance at the ceremony was a high-powered Medal Day Delegation from Ghana, led by the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS), Personnel Administration at the General Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Michael Appiah- Agyekum. Also present was the Commander, Sector Unity, Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Emmanuel Rugazera, the Acting Head of Field Office (HoFO), Madam Jane Lanyero Kony, with the Force Commander (FC) UNMISS, Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Mohan Subramanian who was also the Reviewing Officer for the parade.

Following the presentation of the UN medals to personnel of UNMISS GHANBATT 10, the FC began his address by stating that he felt honoured to present the UN medals to “one of his best battalions with the Force”. The FC said that as he heard torrential rains pounding the roof of his accommodation unit at dawn, he wondered how GHANBATT’s medal presentation parade would still take place. However, he arrived at the Camp to find that GHANBATT was ready for the parade. The FC added that this spoke volumes of GHANBATT’s professionalism and tenacity against all odds and lauded the CO for his exemplary leadership.

The United Kingdom's General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Maj Gen Gerald Mark Strickland called on the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Maj Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at the Army Headquarters on Wednesday 17 May 2023. Maj Gen Strickland said his visit was to explore and assist in activities to accelerate the implementation of the Accra Initiative (Op KOUDANLGOU).

Maj Gen Oppong-Peprah thanked the British government for continuous training assistance through courses and joint exercises in Ghana and in the United Kingdom. Gen Strickland was also briefed on the Accra Initiative by the Mutinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Commander, Maj Gen MA Amoah and the Acting Commander, Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB), Col IN Paintsil.

The Outgoing Chief Staff Officer Army and GOC Central Command, Brig Gen C Agyemang-Prempeh and the Deputy Chief Staff Officers Army and Branch Chiefs attended the briefing session. Others were Staff Officers from the MNJTF HQ and the Acting Sergeant Major of the Army.
