UNODC ORGANISES A FOUR-DAY ‘TRAINING OF TRAINERS’ WORKSHOP FOR SELECTED PRISON OFFICERS
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has organized a four-day ‘Training of Trainers’ workshop for some selected officers of the Ghana Prisons Service (GPS). It is part of a three-year structured support scheme aimed at strengthening the compliance of the Ghana Prisons with the Nelson Mandela Rules.
The training was sponsored by the United States Embassy in Ghana, and took place last week at the Airport View Hotel in Accra. Participants were taken through the Standard Minimum Rules for the treatment of Prisoners also known as the Nelson Mandela Rules, and the Bangkok rules. This forms part of efforts to improve the living conditions and wellbeing of prisoners as well as enhance the capacity of officers in line with international best practices and standards.
The training forms part of a three-year project which focuses on three main areas namely: prisoner classification, rehabilitation of inmates and improving prison conditions.
The Director of Prisons in charge of Agriculture, Mr. Hanson Adu-Awuku noted that, the Service’ vision to conform to International standards and best practices in corrections management places an urgent demand on the Service to work towards the adoption of modern norms in correctional administration.
Mr. Adu-Awuku therefore urged participants to put into action the knowledge acquired to train other officers and cause a positive change in the prisons.
The Commandant of the Prisons Officers’ Training School (POTS), DDP. Gilbert Brandford Hama, thanked officials of UNODC for their immense support over the years. “UNODC has undertaken projects such as a visit to about twenty four prison stations to identify specific needs for support, the donation of 500 mattresses to the Services for prisoners use, on-going refurbishment of the CB Moses Library at POTS to convert it into an e-Learning Centre and development of an enhanced classification to

Prison officers at the Prisons Headquarters today, 30th of March,2023 marked the day with a clean up exercise at the premises of the Headquarters in Cantonments and it's surroundings.
This exercise is part of the usual clean up exercise which is observed every month in the country.

SECOND CLASS OFFICER RITA AMA BOATENG-NKANSAH RECEIVES FIFA BADGE
The Ghana Football Association has presented a FIFA badge to Second Class Officer (2CO) Rita Ama Boateng-Nkansah, one of Ghana's youngest female sensations in football officiating.
Rita is a Junior Prison officer stationed at the Awutu Camp Prison and doubles as a core member of the Reformers Women Basketball Team. Her rise to the top is no meer luck or chance but consistent hardwork, discipline and passion for officiating.2CO Rita Nkansah is widely known for her unbias and professional approach on the field of play which earned her the nod to officiate highly rated male exhibition matches and tough clashes in the Ghana Women Premier League.
She earned the FIFA badge based on her outstanding performance in the previous year and excelling in the FIFA test.
The referee ranking is done every year in each country by the Classification and Assessment Committee to recognize and upgrade the officiating status of deserving professional referees.She is the latest Ghanaian referee to achieve FIFA referee status.
At a young age, Rita aspires to officiate at the highest level in football. She hopes to be at the next edition of the African Women Champions League and the Under 17 Women World Cup.
The presentation was held at the Secretariat of the Ghana Football Association in Accra.

DIRECTOR GENERAL OF NARCOTIC CONTROL COMMISSION PAYS COURTESY CALL TO DIRECTOR GENERAL OF PRISONS
The Director-General of the Narcotic Control Commission, Mr. Kenneth Adu-Amanfoh, together with some members of the commission paid a courtesy call on the Director-General of the Prisons Service, Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir at the Prisons Headquarters, yesterday in Accra.
Acoording to Mr. Adu-Amanfoh, the visit was to formally introduce himself as the new Director -General of the commission to the Prisons Directorate and discuss ways of improving reformation and safe custody of inmates of the country's prisons.
Present at the brief ceremony were the Director of Prisons responsible for Welfare/HR, Mr. Francis Omane Addo, Director of Prisons in charge of Technical and Services, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, Director of Prisons responsible for Health/Admin & Fin, Mr. Samuel Adjei Attah and Director of Prisons in charge of Agriculture, Mr. Hanson Adu Awuku.

DON’T PLAY WITH OPPORTUNITIES- APOSTLE ADP JAMES TETTEH
The outgoing Chaplain-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Apostle Assistant Director of Prisons (ADP) James Teye Tetteh has advised officers to put God first in everything they do and also not to play with opportunities that come their way, but rather avail themselves and work with diligence so that the good Lord will reward them.
Apostle ADP Tetteh said this during a send-off ceremony organized last Friday by the Service in his honour at the Prisons Interdenominational Church. The programme witnessed great attendance of the Prisons Directorate, leadership and members of the Church of Pentecost, Service chaplains, chaplains of sister security Services, former Directors, and Senior and Junior officers across the country.
Apostle Tetteh expressed her gratitude to the almighty God, the Prisons Directorate, the Church of Pentecost, the Prisons Ministry, the clergy and staff of the Service for the support given him over the years.
He thanked the Church of Pentecost for their immense support and massive infrastructural developments being carried out to ease congestion in the prisons.
Apostle ADP James Teye Tetteh joined the Officer Cadet Corp Intake 18 on 2nd December, 2002. After successfully undergoing six months of Para-military Training, he was commissioned as a Deputy Superintendent of Prisons on 13th July, 2003, and was adjudged the Best Officer Cadet and received the Academic Cane. He rose through the ranks of the superior corps to the enviable rank of an Assistant Director of Prisons.
He served as a chaplain at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, and later became the Eastern Regional Chaplain whose focus was planning and implementing pro-social programmes that were tailored for inmates’ behaviour modification so as to make their re-entry into the society a better one.
By dint of hard work and exceptional performance, he was transferred to the Prisons Headquarters as In-Charge of Director-General’s Secretariat, and later Secretary to the Prisons Service Council before his appointment as the Chaplain-General in 2016.
It is worth mentioning that, Apostle Tetteh was credited with a lot achievements including helping to reduce the level of illiteracy among prison inmates, thereby enabling them to read the Bible by themselves, broaden their knowledge base on the word of God and deepen their faith in the Lord, championing the establishment of a Bible School and the Inmates’ Educational Programme in the Nsawam Prison, which has been preparing students for the BECE, WASSCE and NVTI since 2009 among others.
Apostle Tetteh received two medals in recognition of his hard work and commendable service to Mother Ghana: Long Service and Good Conduct Award Medal (Prisons Division), and the Golden Jubilee Medal Award.
He was honoured with a citation for meritoriously serving the Service for two decades without any blemish.
Present at the farewell service were the Director-General of Prisons, Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir; the Deputy Director-General in charge of Finance and Administration, Mrs. Josephine Fredua-Agyemang; Director of Prisons (DOP) in charge of Welfare and Human Resource Development, Mr. Francis Omane Addo; the DOP in charge of Technical and Services, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the DOP in charge of Health, Mr. Samuel Adjei-Attah and DOP in charge of Agriculture, Mr. Hanson Adu-Awuku.
Others were the former DOPs Mr. Sylvester rabbles; Mr. Stephen Cofie; Mrs. Dilys Emma Sawyerr-Laryea; a Chaplain General of the Ghana Armed Forces, Apostle Lieutenant Colonel B. G. Kumi Woode, the Chaplain-General of the Ghana Police Service, Very Reverend Father DCOP George Arthur; the Chaplain-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Reverend Superintendent Michael Baakwaw, and former Chaplains-General of the Prisons Service, Very Reverend DDP JKB Appiah Acheampong and Reverend Dr. ADP Gabriel Dankwah and leadership of the Church of Pentecost led by Apostle David Kamkam Beditor.
