Happy 2020!

2019 was a good year because with your support we were able to reopen the shelter and offer a safe space to sexually abused children, battered women and children with special needs. One such special client is Esi an 11 year old survivor of sexual abuse who was brutally beaten by a family member when she reported the sexual abuse. The nature of Esi's case makes for high expenditure. Although we have quickly done her NHIS, but it carries very little of the costs we have to bear. She needs:
• diapers and wipes
• medical care
• Physio therapy
• Psychotherapy
• Health Insurance
• Special diet
While the Department of Social Welfare is helping with Social Enquiry to help locate her mother, she remains in our care of her, but our funds cannot cover everything because there are other clients to respond to.
Esi needs about GHC4000 to help cover a month and half of her costs. Could you help her?
For all donation please use Momo 0243777773 or call Angela on 0244254280 if you need any clarification.

January 4th, 2019.
A 14 year old girl has been impregnated by her own father. Ghana Police don’t know where to take her while they handle the suspect. A 16 year old girl is sexually assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend. She is also pregnant. The police don’t know where to take her.

In 2016, after 17 years of being the only shelter in Ghana, the Ark Shelter for Battered Women and Children ceased operation due to lack of funding. This meant that abused women and children had no recourse to a safe space away from their abusers and abuse continued till it resulted in death in some documented cases. Given the continued cases of violence against women by intimate partners as well as the cases of r**e, defilement and sexual abuse of children, it is imperative that we reopen the shelter to provide medical, legal, psychological and other support services to survivors of abuse.

The Campaign to Reopen and Keep Open the Ark Shelter was launched in August 2018 to ensure that in Ghana, there is always a safe space in operation where services critical to supporting victims of abuse are available and accessible to women and children caught in the cycle of abuse.

The Campaign has approached individuals, associations and organizations to support the cause to meet the initial target of GHC354,140 for the reopening and maintenance of the Ark Shelter for 2019. Several advocacy groups have adopted the Campaign reflecting the conviction that there has to be at least one functional shelter for children and women who are survivors of abuse in Ghana.

As at January 5th, 2019 the ongoing Campaign had raised GHC101,075 and the Ark Shelter will open for operation in February 2019 to ensure there is a safe space for abused children and battered women in Ghana. We are grateful to all who have made donations and encouraged others to donate to the Ark Shelter.

As this is an ongoing campaign, we urge everyone to continue donating and sharing the Campaign information to ensure that every child and woman abused in Ghana has a safe space to receive services to recover and restart their lives.

Thank you,
Campaign Team

Everyday in Ghana at least 2 abuse victims seek help from the police against their abusers. Unfortunately, since 2016 there has been no shelter they can be referred to.
Please support the campaign to reopen the Ark Shelter to save lives.
