Yesterday on 247 NEWS, the President of National Union of Ghana Students, Rashid Ibrahim, Esq., highlighted that the demand for two years’ rent advance by some hostel operators contradicts Ghana’s Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220), which discourages excessive rent advance payments. This practice places unnecessary financial pressure on students and parents, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of the Rent Control Act to ensure fair, affordable, and lawful accommodation for students.

Yesterday on 247 NEWS, the President of National Union of Ghana Students, Rashid Ibrahim, Esq., highlighted that the demand for excessive rent advances in Ghana continues to burden students, young professionals, and low-income earners. Under the Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220), charging unreasonable rent advance is unlawful and punishable by law. Landlords are prohibited from demanding more than six months’ rent advance for monthly tenancy agreements. Despite this, many tenants are still compelled to pay several years’ rent upfront, causing financial hardship and housing insecurity. The Rent Control Department must strengthen enforcement and protect tenants from exploitation. Respecting rent regulations is essential to ensuring fairness, dignity, and accessible housing for all Ghanaians.

Yesterday, the Rent Control Department, led by the Rent Commissioner, conducted a tour of selected hostels in KNUST, Kumasi to assess the unjustified increases in hostel prices by managers.

This follows a petition by NUGS, calling on the Department to enforce the provisions of the Rent Act and protect students from arbitrary rent hikes.
