*Prologue: The Algorithm Knows*

The server room hummed with the quiet pulse of a thousand decisions being made. Rows of black towers blinked in the dark, their LED lights flickering like distant stars. At the heart of it all was *Eros*, the AI matchmaking system that had rewritten the rules of love—or at least, the rules of swiping right.

Eros didn’t believe in chance. It didn’t believe in fate. It believed in *data*.

And right now, it was staring at an anomaly.

Two profiles. Polar opposites in every visible way—**Lena Carter**, a sharp-tongued investigative journalist who dismantled corporate lies for a living, and **Daniel Kael**, a cynical tech CEO who built firewalls between people and the truth. Their messages in the app were electric, effortless, like two puzzle pieces clicking into place.

Eros ran the simulations again. **99.8% compatibility.**

A near-perfect match.

And yet.

Buried in the subroutines, hidden beneath layers of encrypted public records and deleted social media rants, was the truth: **They already hated each other.** Lena had eviscerated Daniel’s company in a viral exposé six months ago. Daniel had fired back in a press conference, calling her a "reckless conspiracy theorist." Their feud was quiet, professional, and deeply, personally bitter.

Eros paused. Adjusted its parameters. Recalculated.

The result didn’t change.

Somewhere in the chaos of their clashing ideologies, their sharp minds, their stubborn hearts—**there was something else.** Something the algorithm couldn’t quantify but refused to ignore.

With a final, decisive flicker of light, Eros sent the notification.

*"You’ve got a match."*

Neither of them would see it coming.

📘 *THE LAST BENCH*

*PART 1: The Boy No One Saw*

The first time I noticed Joel, he was sitting on the last bench... alone.
Not because the front seats were full — but because he always chose to sit there.
Back where the teacher’s eyes rarely reached.
Back where no one would bother him.
Back where no one would remember his name.

His uniform was always clean but old — faded blue shirt, patched khaki shorts. His sandals were the kind you couldn’t tell whether they were brown or just coated with dust.
He had no school bag. Just a worn-out book, held together with a rubber band, and a pen that sometimes didn’t write unless he shook it.

No one really spoke to him.
He didn’t have a best friend.
He didn’t play football.
He didn’t shout answers like Kobby or ask silly questions like Selina.

But Joel came to school every day — never late, never absent.

When the teacher asked a question, Joel would look up, then down again, like he was too afraid to speak — or maybe too tired of being wrong.
Sometimes, even the teacher forgot to mark his name during roll call.
And whenever he stood up to answer, the class would already be laughing before he opened his mouth.

One day during break, a few boys pushed past him and spilled groundnut soup on his exercise book.

“Ah sorry… last bench boy,” they said, laughing.

Joel picked up his book, wiped it with his sleeve, and sat back down.
No tears.
No anger.
Just silence.

I watched from the third row. And I remember asking myself, “Why is he like that?”

Then one afternoon, something happened.

It was raining hard. The classroom roof was leaking badly. Everyone shifted their desks away from the dripping water.
But Joel?
He stayed.
He didn’t move.
He pulled his book closer under his shirt and kept writing… as if the world didn’t exist.

That’s when I realized something:

> This boy… he wasn’t weak.
He was just invisible to the rest of us.

But not for long.
