Preconception care simply refers to a set of interventions aimed at identifying and modifying biomedical, behavioral and social risk to a woman's health or pregnancy. In a lay mans term it is the care a woman receives before she gets pregnant.

Preconception care is very important in the life of a couple as it ;

*Prevent still and preterm birth.

* Prevents low birth weight as well as birth defects.

*Prevents neonatal infections .

*Prevents vertical transmission of HIV/STDs.

Preconception care has 4 components which includes.

1.Physical Assessment: where the woman's anthropometric measurements (B.M.I).will be taken. This is because women who are overweight or obese do have problems when they get pregnant.
Also biochemical assessment wi be done here ( where it will be checked if the woman has anaemia diabetes or any medical condition that might affect the pregnancy)..The blood type and rhesus will.be checked as well.

2.Risk Assessment:Here chromosomal or genetic disorder in the family will be checked and looked into .Also any history of depression or psychosocial stress will be looked into and intervened upon. Again sexually transmitted diseases are tested for and managed to minimize it's chances of crossing the placenta barrier to affect the baby. STDs like Gonorrhoea can cause sudden blindness in a baby and it is therefore imperative to be tested for.

3. Vaccination:This is done to protect the woman against any vaccine preventable diseases. As some diseases like varicella can cross the placenta barrier to affect the baby.

4. Counselling: Over the counter drugs are discouraged as some may be teratogenic ( cause harm to the baby). Also exposure to radiations and other toxins tagst may harm the woman and the baby are discouraged.

All these investigations are done even before a couple plans to have children. With all these done the couple are assured of a safe pregnancy and delivery and of course a healthy baby free from birth defects.

We couldn't be in a better profession. By the grace of God we find ourselves in the most noble and beautiful profession " NURSING AND MIDWIFERY".

We acknowledge all health workers, God bless you all and grant you long life to continue your good work.

One major function of nurses and midwives is to reassure our clients or patients. Amazingly and surprisingly it is almost always our first intervention in solving our clients' problems. This reassurance gives our clients the hope and faith so that together healing can be made manifest. This is done to get the brain rejuvenated and revived since the brain controls all body activities. This takes us to the scriptures "if we believe it we will have it". This tells us that if we can get our brain to receive healing even when its not yet manifested, we are almost getting healed or cured of our diseases and illnesses. Now this we find " *imperative* *and graceful* " in caring for our patients or clients.

Lastly,by reassurance we actually sink the healing power of God into our clients" bodies.

Love is beautiful. It is best enjoyed when you are with the right person of whom you are assured of minimal risk in the future.Know your genotype now to make sure your kids do not suffer later.Yes am talking about sickle cell disease. It is not curable but highly preventable.Think about it ..
Now sickle cell disease is a group of blood hereditary disorder characterized by red blood cells that contain an abnormal haemoglobin(S).Now the crisis is when these abnormal haemoglobin(S) gets occluded in the blood vessels(most common cause of the crisis) and therefore oxygen is not being able to be carried through out the body. This disorder is autosomal meaning it is inherited from both parents with a defective form of the gene.Children of such parents tend to suffer the consequences of such ailments. Now as a parent will you sit and watch your young one suffer from swelling of the hands and feet ,fever ,severe episodes of pain in the joints and recurrent infection..?
Obviously NO!!
Then know your genotype now..
