AYAWASO EAST NDC PRIMARIES: QUESTIONS THAT DEMAND ANSWERS
By
Mohammed Mutaru
Amasaman Constituency Organizer Hopeful
The recently concluded NDC Parliamentary Primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency have generated significant public interest and concern, not merely because of the outcome, but because of the circumstances surrounding the process.
The official results declared were as follows:
Mohammed Ramne — 88 votes
Amina Adam — 399 votes
Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed — 431 votes
Dr. Yakubu Azindow — 45 votes
Najib Mohammed Sani — 1 vote
This brings the total number of valid votes cast to 964.
Hon. Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed emerged winner with 431 votes, defeating the closest contender, Hon. Amina Adam, by a margin of 32 votes.
What has deeply troubled many party faithful, however, are the open admissions and widespread reports that the election was marred by inducement of delegates, specifically through the distribution of 32-inch Nasco television sets.
Hon. Baba Jamal himself publicly admitted to sharing television sets with delegates, while maintaining that this was not intended to influence voting, arguing that delegates already knew who they were going to vote for. While this explanation has been offered, it raises serious questions about ethics, fairness, and internal democracy.
The Mathematics of the Allegation
Let us examine the issue calmly and factually.
If we assume, conservatively, that 60% of the total delegates were targeted with television sets:
60% of 964 delegates = approximately 578 delegates
The average market price of a 32-inch Nasco television is about GHS 1,500.
578 TVs × GHS 1,500 = GHS 867,000
This means that nearly nine hundred thousand Ghana cedis could have been spent on television sets alone.
It is also common knowledge in Ghanaian political practice that material items distributed to delegates are often accompanied by transport money, cash support, or other forms of appreciation. While there is no direct evidence at this time to confirm cash payments, assuming even a modest GHS 200 per delegate would amount to:
578 delegates × GHS 200 = GHS 115,600
When combined, this places the estimated total expenditure at approximately GHS 982,600, close to one million Ghana cedis.
This calculation is not an accusation. It is a reasonable estimation meant to illustrate the scale of resources alleged to have been deployed.
The Symbolism That Cannot Be Ignored
It is difficult for party members and the general public to ignore the coincidence that:
The winning margin was 32 votes
The items allegedly distributed were 32-inch televisions
Even if coincidental, the symbolism alone damages confidence in the process and undermines trust in the integrity of our internal elections.
The Broader Implications for the NDC
This incident gives further weight to the recent position expressed by the National Secretary of the NDC, Fiifi Kwetey, that government appointees must resign before contesting party positions. The reasoning is clear: access to state power and resources creates unequal competition and encourages excesses that weaken internal democracy.
While the NDC has issued general warnings in the past about vote buying and inducement, silence or inaction in a case of this magnitude would be dangerous. It would set a precedent that money, rather than grassroots work and credibility, determines leadership within the party.
What Should the National FEC Do?
This is the critical question before the National Functional Executive Committee:
Should the Ayawaso East primaries be nullified if inducement is established?
Should Hon. Baba Jamal be sanctioned or compelled to step aside to protect the party’s integrity?
Or should the party allow this matter to pass without decisive action, risking deeper internal disillusionment?
I reserve my final judgment. However, I strongly believe that how the party handles this case will define the credibility of future internal elections and parliamentary primaries.
The NDC has always prided itself on fairness, discipline, and internal democracy. Those values must be defended not in words, but in action.
The stakes are too high for silence.

In party politics, numbers are power.
Numbers are strength.
Numbers decide direction.
That is why membership matters.
That is why organization comes first.
And that is why I believe the future of the NDC begins from the ground up.
When we grow our numbers,
we grow our influence.
When we organize our base,
we secure victory.
As an Amasaman Constituency Organizer Hopeful,
my mission is clear:
mobilize the people,
strengthen the party,
and prepare for victory together. 💚✊🏾
The time is now.
Together, we can.
