NZEMA EAST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY SELECTED FOR BLOOMBERG YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION FUND (YCAF)
============================================================================================================
The Nzema East Municipal Assembly (NEMA) in the Western Region of Ghana has been selected to receive the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund, a global initiative aimed at empowering young people to lead climate action and community resilience projects.

The municipality, with Axim as its capital, is among 300 cities and municipalities worldwide competitively selected to receive funding and technical support under the expanded programme, which seeks to mobilise young people between the ages of 15 and 24 to design and implement climate-related solutions aligned with local development priorities.
nnouncing the selection on May 26, 2026, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nzema East, Herbert Kuah Dickson, described the initiative as a major opportunity to position young people at the centre of climate leadership and innovation in the municipality.

“For us, this $50,000 is more than a grant. It is an opportunity to position young people at the centre of local climate leadership, innovation, and community resilience,” he said.
“Through this partnership, we have the opportunity to support youth-led initiatives that are locally relevant and capable of delivering measurable community impact in our municipality,” he added.

Under the programme, NEMA will launch innovation competitions later in June 2026, inviting young residents to submit proposals for climate-focused initiatives. Successful applicants will receive funding support from an initial allocation of $40,000, alongside technical assistance from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

The Assembly will also dedicate staff to support implementation of selected projects from inception to completion. The projects are expected to focus on areas such as public space development, infrastructure improvement, disaster mitigation, environmental sustainability, and community resilience.

Municipalities that successfully deploy the first tranche of funding within the stipulated timeline will qualify for an additional $50,000 to scale up youth-driven projects and broaden participation.
Chief Executive Officer of Bloomberg Philanthropies, Patricia E. Harris, said the initiative was helping local governments around the world work more closely with young people to address climate challenges.

“The Youth Climate Action Fund is helping city halls around the world work alongside hundreds of thousands of young people to take action on city climate challenges and improve their communities,” she stated.

“They are showing how local government can be a partner on issues youth and residents care deeply about – and they are building trust along the way. We look forward to expanding on these efforts and inspiring a new generation of civic leaders,” she added.
According to Bloomberg Philanthropies, results from the first phase of the programme have shown significant gains in youth participation and confidence in local governance. Surveys conducted among participants revealed that trust in local government leadership increased from 61 percent to 83 percent, while confidence in young people’s ability to address environmental challenges rose from 65 percent to 90 percent.

The organisation noted that participating municipalities have also introduced new youth engagement structures, including advisory boards, youth councils, participatory budgeting processes, and dedicated staff roles to sustain youth involvement in governance and climate policy development.

NEMA is expected to officially open applications for the Youth Climate Action Fund in late June 2026 through its official portal.

Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are encouraged to visit nema.gov.gh for details on eligibility, project submission guidelines, and funding opportunities.
Globally, the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund has engaged more than 300,000 young people across five continents, supporting over 1,600 green spaces, the planting of more than 1.8 million plants and 235,000 trees, establishment of nearly 5,000 gardens, and the launch of 268 composting stations.

Bloomberg Philanthropies invests in cities and communities across 150 countries, focusing on the arts, education, environment, government innovation, and public health. In 2025, the organisation distributed $4.3 billion in philanthropic support worldwide.

NZEMA EAST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY COMMUNITY VISIT TO AMAFUKUMA BY THE MUNICIPAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE.

NEMANEWS: TUESDAY, 5TH MAY, 2026, AMAFUKUMA

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Nzema East Municipal Assembly, Hon. Herbert Kuah Dickson, together with some staff of the Assembly, paid a community engagement visit to Amafukuma.
During the meeting, community members appealed to the MCE for urgent intervention regarding the poor lighting system in Amafukuma and Solo. According to the residents, the inadequate lighting situation has negatively affected security and evening activities within the communities.
The community also raised concerns about the persistent shortage of premix fuel, which continues to pose serious challenges to fishermen in Amafukuma and Solo. They explained that the lack of premix fuel prevents them from going to sea to fish, thereby affecting their livelihoods and economic activities. The residents therefore appealed to the MCE to help address both the fuel shortage and the lighting challenges as a matter of urgency.
In response, the MCE assured the community that measures were already underway to resolve the issues. He indicated that contractors would soon commence work on improving the lighting system in the area. He further assured residents that whenever premix fuel is supplied, fair distribution would be ensured to guarantee that all fishermen receive their rightful share.
Additionally, the MCE requested an accurate record of the total number of boats in the community to support effective premix fuel distribution. He also recommended the introduction of identification cards for fishermen to improve monitoring and accountability.
As part of the Assembly’s support to the community, the MCE provided an amount of GHC 5,000 to cover the cost of the 50 bags of cement he pledged towards supporting community development initiatives.
