National Food Safety Lab showcases AMR work at the 8th Congress of the European Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians in Greece

National Food Safety Laboratory ,the Antimicrobial Resistance Reference Lab for Animal Health wins a Travel Grant with Benjamin Kissi Sasu ,the deputy head making a poster Presentation on research work, titled: Antibiotic-resistant patterns of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. from broiler farms and a comparative assessment of antimicrobial stewardship among farmers in three regions of Ghana.
The study looked at an antimicrobial Stewardship for poultry farmers which uses Farmer Field Concept and its impact in terms of Antimicrobial Resistance Control. The Farmer field School concept was used to train farmers using theory and practical demonstrations for weeks on biosecurity measures,record keeping, and prudent use of antimicrobials by always consulting your veterinary officer. This work was supported by the Animal & Plant Health Agency of UK through FAO AMR Reference Lab.
The same research was given as oral presentation during the 3rd Biennial Postgraduate Conference of the College of Health Sciences,KNUST in June 2026 and the same work will be presented at the 2026 Annual Research Meeting (ARM) of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana, Legon .

FHI Supports VSD to develop Harmonised SOPs for Ghana Veterinary Labs

The FHI 360 through the support of the Department of States(US) has supported the Veterinary Laboratory Network of Ghana to develop some Harmonised SOPs from 12th -16th October,2026 . The developed documents which are ready for validation includes Ghana Veterinary Laboratories Handbook, Harmonised Test Menu of Veterinary Labs in Ghana, Sample Referral SOP and Laboratory Tier System. The Regional Veterinary officer,Dr. Mabel Abudu who gave the closing remarks and thanked all participants present. She encouraged the current laboratory workforce in Veterinary Services to use the existing opportunities to develop documents and capacity needed for quality veterinary laboratory services delivery as we play out part in the One Health Concept implementation in Ghana. She concluded her remarks by thanking FHI 360 and representatives for the Human Health for their technical support.

Training on Antimicrobial Use , Antimicrobial Resistance & Farm Biosecurity in Eastern Region

The Veterinary Services Department, with the support of the UK Government-funded Tackling Deadly Diseases in Africa Programme 2, being implemented by the Palladium Group and its consortium partners organised training of one farmer field Schools in Poultry in Eastern Region on Antimicrobial Use , Antimicrobial Resistance & Farm Biosecurity on 8th & 7th October,2026 . The training gave opportunity to introduce a monitoring system for farmers to report the antimicrobial usage at farm level to Veterinary Services.
There was a farm visit to have a practical demonstration of biosecurity measures
