🌱 ECOCLAY CHARCOAL INITIATIVE (ECCI) | TAKING THE CONVERSATION TO THE COMMUNITIES

Before production begins, we believe in listening to the people at the heart of the initiative.

Last week, the programs team of Social Impact Hub Ghana (SiHG) were in Katariga and Gumo communities of the Sagnarigu and Kumbungu Districts to engage prospective beneficiaries ahead of the implementation of the (ECCI).

The visit was an opportunity to hear from community members, discuss their expectations and explore what it will take to turn the initiative into a practical and sustainable livelihood opportunity.

Discussions focused on four key areas:
🌱 Market Access: Exploring potential markets and how the product could reach customers.
🌱 Production Scale: Discussing production capacity and what may be required to meet future demand.
🌱 PPEs and Safety: Highlighting the importance of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPEs) and safe working practices during production.
🌱 Future Opportunities: Exploring how ECCI could open doors to other community-based initiatives, particularly for women and young people.

For SiHG,this engagement is an important step in ensuring that the initiative is shaped not only by an idea, but also by the realities, interests and aspirations of the people it is intended to serve.

As we prepare for the pilot phase, our focus remains on testing the EcoClay Charcoal production process, learning from community experiences and assessing its potential to support better use of suitable organic materials, reduce pressure on woody resources and create green livelihood opportunities.

We recognise that meaningful community development takes more than introducing a project. It requires listening, collaboration, practical learning and a willingness to improve along the way.

The journey towards community-driven green innovation starts with the people.

🌱 ECOCLAY CHARCOAL INITIATIVE (ECCI) | PILOT PHASE πŸ“£

Testing a local idea for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

After the long wait and strategic team planning meetings on it, Social Impact Hub Ghana(SiHG) is finally ready to roll out the (ECCI) from October to November 2026 in three selected communities across the Sagnarigu and Kumbungu Districts of the Northern Region.

The idea is simple: explore how suitable organic raw materials components can be turned into an alternative cooking fuel while creating practical skills and livelihood opportunities for people in participating communities.

The pilot phase will directly engage 50–100 women and young people, with priority given to those interested in green enterprise, production, alternative energy, livelihoods and community environmental action.

The need is important. Continued dependence on wood-based cooking fuels, particularly charcoal and firewood, contributes immensely to pressure on trees and other woody resources. At the same time, communities generate organic and agricultural residues that are often underutilised.
ECCI seeks to bring these two challenges together by testing locally available materials that can be converted into a safe, affordable and practical alternative cooking fuel.

During the two-month pilot, SiHG and participating communities will focus on:
🌱 Practical training and production demonstrations

🌱 Testing and improving EcoClay Charcoal formulations and product modelling

🌱 User feedback and product performance assessment

🌱 Exploring the use of suitable organic residues

🌱 Developing green skills among women and young people

🌱 Assessing the potential for future livelihood and enterprise opportunities

This is a pilot phase to test what works, learn from the people who will produce and use the product, document the evidence and make informed decisions on the next phase of the initiative.

The wider ambition is to contribute to reduced pressure on woody resources, better use of organic waste materials, climate resilience and locally driven green livelihood opportunities.

Clean Energy. Protected Forests. Resilient Communities.

πŸ“ Pilot Areas: Sagnarigu & Kumbungu Districts
Duration: October–November 2026
Direct Beneficiaries: 50–100 women and young people
Communities: 3 selected communities

WEEKLY ACTIVITY REPORT | – COHORT 1

Last week, Social Impact Hub Ghana (SiHG) brought Cohort 1 of the Workshop to a close, concluding two practical training sessions delivered over a two-week period for MSMEs, artisans, social entrepreneurs and emerging business owners.

The cohort recorded a total attendance of 26 participants, reflecting the interest and growing need for practical business development support among local entrepreneurs.

The sessions were facilitated by Mr. Amin Yahaya, Senior Consultant and Founder/Director of Samakose, who engaged participants through practical learning focused on strengthening their businesses, improving their readiness for opportunities and developing a clearer pathway for growth.

Throughout the two sessions, participants were encouraged to move beyond simply just having a business idea or activity and to consider the structures, systems, visibility and market opportunities needed to build more sustainable and growth-oriented enterprises.

Key areas covered included:
1. Business opportunity identification and customer understanding

2. Business model assessment and strengthening

3. Business structuring and legalisation

4. Business visibility and market readiness

5. Pathways for expanding from local opportunities to wider markets

The completion of Cohort 1 marks another step in SiHG’s commitment to practical entrepreneurship development, enterprise strengthening and inclusive economic opportunity.

🌍 STRENGTHENING NORTHERN GHANA’S ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM WITH INCLUSIVITY: FROM TO

Strong entrepreneurs build strong communities. Strong ecosystems build sustainable enterprises.
Ahead of the upcoming Workshop, Social Impact Hub Ghana (SiHG) β€”yesterday, welcomed Madam Abdul Wahab Humaimatu, the Northern Regional Head of Informal Apprenticeship at the Ghana TVET Service-Northern Region , to our office for a strategic collaborative meeting.

The engagement provided an opportunity to explore how skills development, entrepreneurship support, innovation and strategic partnerships can better position entrepreneurs within Northern Ghana’s informal sector for sustainable growth.

From artisans and women entrepreneurs to MSMEs, startups and social entrepreneurs, thousands of people are building businesses, creating livelihoods and providing essential services within our communities.
But talent and determination alone are not always enough.

Many entrepreneurs still need access to continuous capacity building, digital skills, financial literacy, business development support, branding and marketing, technology, mentorship, market linkages, finance and networks that can help them move from survival to sustainable growth.

πŸ’‘ CAPACITY BUILDING CANNOT BE A ONE-TIME EVENT.
We strongly believe that entrepreneurship development should be continuous, practical and responsive to the changing needs of businesses.

Frequent capacity-building workshops can help entrepreneurs:
βœ… Strengthen business management and financial practices
βœ… Adopt digital tools and emerging technologies
βœ… Improve branding, marketing and customer acquisition
βœ… Develop innovative products and services
βœ… Access new markets and business networks
βœ… Become investment and partnership ready
βœ… Create sustainable jobs and livelihoods
βœ… Build enterprises capable of scaling beyond their immediate communities

The Workshop is one step towards creating that ecosystemβ€”an ecosystem where local entrepreneurs are not only equipped to survive, but are empowered to innovate, scale and compete in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

When we invest in entrepreneurs,we invest in jobs.
When we strengthen MSMEs,we strengthen communities.
When we empower the ecosystem, we strengthen the economy.
And when we connect local potential to global opportunity, we multiply impact. 🌍

At SiHG, we believe the future of inclusive economic development must be collaborative, innovative and locally rootedβ€”with a global outlook.

πŸš€ The journey starts local, but the ambition is global.
The impact is collective.
Let’s build the ecosystem together.

🌱 From Skill β†’ Saving β†’ Financing β†’ Banking: Women Are Building Stronger Livelihoods

As we close the chapter on our August activities, the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) Team of Social Impact Hub Ghana (SiHG) conducted a follow-up visit to women-led cooperative groups across our communities to assess progress, document learning, and understand how our interventions are translating into meaningful change.

What we witnessed was encouraging.
Women who started with just skills and small-scale economic activities are increasingly using their cooperative groups as platforms to save, access financial support, invest in their businesses, and take steps toward formal banking and greater financial inclusion.

πŸ“Œ The journey is becoming clearer:
SKILL β†’ SAVING β†’ FINANCING β†’ BANKING β†’ GROWTH

For women in the informal economy, access to skills alone is not enough. Sustainable impact requires connecting skills development with savings, affordable financing, financial literacy, and pathways to formal financial services.
Our MEAL team was particularly impressed by the practical ways members are using resources from their cooperative groups to improve their livelihoods and strengthen their economic resilience.

This is the kind of community-level transformation we are committed to documenting, learning from, and scaling.
Behind every statistic is a woman building a more secure future for herself, her family, and her community.
At Social Impact Hub Ghana,we believe that when women have the skills, systems, financial opportunities and support to grow, communities grow with them.

The journey has just started. The next step is scaling the impact.πŸš€
