REPORT ON THE REOPENING OF THE TMA DAYCARE CENTRE TEMA COMMUNITY ONE
In line with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly’s mandate to restore safety, order, and quality early childhood education, the TMA Daycare Centre at Community One, Site 17/18, Oninku Drive, has officially reopened following a tragic aircraft incident that led to its temporary closure.
The reopening which was held on Tuesday 14th April, 2026 marked a significant achievement in the Assembly’s swift response to the unfortunate crash of a microlight aircraft on 16th March 2026, which claimed two lives but, remarkably, left all pupils and staff unharmed.
In the aftermath, the facility was closed to allow for investigations and to undertake extensive refurbishment works aimed at restoring and improving the learning environment.
Central to the reopening was the Assembly’s deliberate effort to not only repair but significantly upgrade the facility. The renovation works, though ongoing, have transformed the daycare centre into a safer, more structured, and child-friendly space.
As part of the ceremony, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Ebi Bright, led dignitaries in the official ribbon-cutting to symbolically reopen the facility before proceeding to inspect the refurbished daycare centre.
Key improvements were subsequently highlighted during the inspection of the premises, led by the Head of the estate Unit, who took dignitaries through the upgraded facilities, demonstrating the extent of work done and the Assembly’s commitment to quality infrastructure for early childhood development.
The ceremony itself was marked by a strong show of unity and support, brought together a wide range of stakeholders. Present were the clergy and other religious leaders, traditional authorities, Chief Imams, government officials, and representatives from key institutions including the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, National health insurance Scheme, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Navy, and the Ghana National Fire Service, and reps from the Creative Arts industry. Also in attendance were Community members, Assembly members, Management and staff of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, the Headmistress, teachers, learners, parents, and the general public, all of whom played various roles in supporting the school’s recovery.
A solemn tribute was held in honour of the two individuals who lost their lives in the crash, recognised for their patriotism and sacrifice. A video presentation was shown in their memory, followed by a one-minute silence observed by all present as a mark of respect.
A representative of the bereaved family, speaking with dignity and composure, expressed gratitude for the support received and encouraged the children and school community to move forward with courage and hope.
A defining feature of the event was the remarkable courage displayed by the pupils and staff, who returned to the school environment with confidence and without fear. Through songs, recitals, and participation in the programme, the children demonstrated resilience and emotional recovery, symbolising hope and continuity.
In her keynote address, the MCE, Hon. Ebi Bright, stated the significance of the reopening as a symbol of resilience and collective strength. She emphasized that while the incident was tragic, it also served as a test of the community’s unity, compassion, and responsiveness. She commended all stakeholders including the clergy, security services, health professionals, educators, and parents for their support in helping the children and staff navigate the trauma.
She further highlighted the importance of enforcing regulations concerning unauthorised zones and safeguarding public spaces, particularly schools government corridors and other vulnerable institutions. She assured the public of strengthened collaboration with relevant authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Overall, the reopening ceremony was not only a return to academic normalcy but a display of community resilience, effective leadership, and institutional responsibility. The TMA Daycare Centre has resumed operations in a renewed environment, strengthened by the collective effort of all.
