🌾 ROOTS Hands Over Lot 2 Land Development Sites in URR

A major step towards expanding rice production in the Upper River Region! The ROOTS Project held the official handing-over ceremony for its Lot 2 Pump Irrigation Works at the Regional Directorate’s Hall in URR, followed by visits to sites in the Basse Cluster, Sotuma Samba and Kossemar.
The US$13.93 million investment will develop or rehabilitate approximately 685 hectares of rice fields across six communities: Kossemar, Sotuma Samba, Changally, Basse, Koina and Keneba.
The works will include land preparation, improved access, pumping facilities, irrigation and drainage systems, and operator training. Once completed, these improvements are expected to support double cropping, boost rice productivity and strengthen farmers’ livelihoods.

Implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security, with support from IFAD and AFD, this investment contributes to The Gambia’s drive towards rice self-sufficiency.

President Barrow Visits ROOTS Rice Land Development Sites in Foni

His Excellency President Adama Barrow visited the adjoining ROOTS land development sites in Kandunku and Batendeng Kajara, West Coast Region, to observe ongoing works aimed at improving rice production and supporting The Gambia’s drive towards rice self-sufficiency.

Covering 20.7 hectares, the two sites will benefit 226 farmers, including 189 women. The development works include nine contour-line d***s and spillways designed to improve water management, reduce soil erosion and support rice cultivation.

The sites form part of ROOTS’ wider 388-hectare land development investment across eight communities. Overall works under Lot 1 are 78% complete, with completion scheduled for 26 November 2026.

Implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security through ROOTS, with funding from IFAD, the intervention aims to strengthen rice production, improve food security and enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, particularly women.

🌾 ROOTS In The Rice Field! | Beneficiary’s Testimonial

Meet Fatoumatta Jange, a rice farmer from Noo K***a, North Bank Region.
For the past two years, support from the ROOTS Project has helped her overcome challenges in accessing mechanisation and timely farming inputs. With ploughing, seeds and fertilizer now available on time, Fatoumatta says her harvest has improved significantly.

Today, her family no longer has to buy rice for household consumption. Her next goal is to produce beyond consumption and sell her surplus, while putting measures in place to sustain production beyond the life of the Project.

🌱 From overcoming farming challenges to building a more productive and sustainable livelihood.
