The Resilience Gambia Project (RGP) has concluded a 5️⃣day Community Mobilisation and Technical Training Workshop on Mangrove Restoration in Bantanjang, West Coast Region (WCR), and Bambally, North Bank Region (NBR), ahead of the 2026 planting season.

The workshop equipped target communities and field-level stakeholders with practical knowledge and skills to support proper mangrove planting, protect restored areas, monitor progress, and document lessons for future restoration efforts.

Mangrove restoration does not end when the propagules are planted. It requires regular monitoring, protection from damage and the continued involvement of the communities living alongside these ecosystems. The training helped prepare local stakeholders for these responsibilities ahead of the 2026 planting season.

The Resilience Gambia Project (RGP) has commenced pre-planting site preparation at Elephant Island in the North Bank Region (NBR), launching the first phase of the 2026 mangrove restoration campaign.

The first phase focuses on the selective removal of dead, old, and degraded mangrove stumps and logs to prepare restoration sites for planting and create the right conditions for new life to take root.

Why this matters:

✅Prepare degraded restoration sites for planting.
✅ Create adequate space for the approved restoration design and planting density.
✅ Improve access and operational efficiency for community restoration teams.
✅Enhance the survival and establishment of mangrove propagules.
✅ Ensure restoration sites are technically ready for the next phase of mangrove planting.

Strong restoration outcomes begin with strong preparation. By investing in this critical first step, RGP is laying the foundation for healthier mangrove ecosystems, stronger coastal resilience, and sustainable livelihoods for communities across The Gambia.

recently joined Ministry of Environment-MECCNAR and project partners for a joint monitoring mission to ongoing project sites across the country, engaging with communities and seeing firsthand the progress, challenges, and impact of interventions.

Beyond the reports and plans, the field visits gave us a chance to listen, learn, and work together on practical ways to strengthen project delivery.
