Dear Gambia police,

I hope this message coming from a mother, a sister and deep from the bottom of my heart finds you well?

The death of Omar Badjie (RIP)of Mandinary village in The Gambia’s West Coast Region has taken a major legal turn after a Coroner’s inquest recommended possible criminal proceedings against police officers involved. (Abstract from Fatu network).

If this and other previous cases including the Faraba Banta incident and other “in-custody deaths” are not enough to serve as a wake up call for the police, I don’t know what else will be.

Remember the law is very clear “ innocent until proven guilty by a court of law”. The law never said “guilty during arrest”.

If you still think that you can’t do without kicking, punching and violating every single human right protecting human decency during arrest you are not doing justice not only to your victim, but to your own family -when you run into trouble they too suffer.

It is not enough to cry for longterm security sector reform. This country must amend itself now. We cannot continue to lose innocent lives to police brutality and the excesses of the security sector.

Country first means protecting live and property of every citizen, especially those that do not agree with the happenings of the day.

We are judged, not by how we treat our “good citizens” but by how we treat those we perceive to be our enemies.

Allowing the Niuminkas to run this country for even a day is painful and messy.

They are everywhere right now, shouting from every corner.

The funniest part? One of them actually walked up to me and asked for my office key, shouting, “I am now the mayor!”

I thought it was a joke. Until I heard the same story from KM and West Coast.
