He commended the contractors, particularly Bologel, for what he described as their tremendous work and commitment to delivering quality infrastructure.

The inauguration ceremony, held at Madiana Lower Basic School, attracted residents and beneficiaries from Kombo North and Kombo South, alongside government officials and community leaders.
Implemented by SSTP Construction Company with the National Roads Authority (NRA) serving as consultant, the project links the communities of Brufut, Madiana, Banyaka and Kunkujang Mariama.
Constructed as a double-surface-dressed road, with eight metres width designed to improve durability and withstand heavy rains during the rainy season.
The road is expected to ease movement within the beneficiary communities, facilitate the transportation of goods and services, and improve access to schools, health facilities and other essential social services. It is also anticipated to boost economic and social activities across the area.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Barrow said infrastructure development goes beyond connecting places, noting that quality roads create opportunities and strengthen community ties.
He stated that the newly completed road would help reduce isolation in Kombo South and reinforce the government’s commitment to ensuring that development reaches rural and coastal communities, not only urban centres.
NRA Managing Director, Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, said the project consists of 12 kilometres of bituminous paved road built to a standard carriageway width of eight metres.
According to him, the road was designed to accommodate increasing traffic volumes, improve road safety, enhance drainage performance and ensure long-term durability in the rapidly urbanising area.

NRA Holds Sensitisation Meeting on Ebo Town Dewatering Project
The National Roads Authority (NRA), on Wednesday 6 May 2026, held a community sensitisation meeting in Ebo Town ahead of the implementation of an underground water (dewatering) project in the area.
The meeting, attended by community leaders and residents, was organised in collaboration with Youth and Sports Minister Bakary Badjie, a native of Ebo Town. It aimed to inform residents about the project and its expected benefits.
Speaking after the meeting, NRA Managing Director Sulayman Sumareh Janneh said persistent underground water in Ebo Town has been damaging roads and affecting homes in the community.
He explained that hydraulic pressure from the underground water has been lifting newly constructed roads, prompting the NRA to launch the dewatering initiative instead of continuing road repairs without addressing the root cause.
According to him, the project is designed to lower and control the water table through a scientific drainage and filtration system that will channel excess water to a designated collection point.
Janneh described the initiative as a long-term intervention and said, if successful, it could serve as a model for tackling underground water challenges in other parts of The Gambia.
Minister Bakary Badjie welcomed the project, saying residents of Ebo Town have struggled with water inundation for decades during both rainy and dry seasons.
He said the project would help improve living conditions by reducing flooding in homes and compounds, while also protecting infrastructure in the area.
Yakumba Houma, Project Manager for Coastal Engineering, the contractor executing the works, described the initiative as a pilot project aimed at reducing the high-water table in Ebo Town.
She said the project involves excavating ponds to collect underground water before pumping it through a drainage system into nearby swamps.
Residents at the meeting also expressed relief and appreciation for the project, saying the underground water problem has affected their lives for many years.
Coastal Engineering is executing the project under the supervision of the NRA.

NA Select Committee Impressed with Progress on Government-Funded Roads Projects
The National Assembly Select Committee for Monitoring the Implementation of Government Projects has expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of work on ongoing government-funded road construction projects across the country.
The committee has been undertaking a week-long nationwide inspection tour to assess various government intervention projects, with a particular focus on road infrastructure development.
Mandated by the National Assembly to conduct quarterly monitoring visits on approved government-funded projects, the committee’s latest tour sought to evaluate the implementation of road projects currently underway nationwide.
Speaking after touring several project sites, the Chairperson of the Select Committee, Yaya Menteng Sanyang, commended the scale and quality of road works currently underway nationwide.
“We are very impressed. I have to be very honest, even as an opposition MP, the government is doing very well as far as road infrastructure intervention is concerned. Road construction is very expensive, and today there are roads being built across the country,” he said.
The lawmaker for Latrikunda Sabiji Constituency noted that the projects will improve connectivity between communities, stimulate economic activity and strengthen trade across the country.
Hon. Sanyang further explained that part of the committee’s oversight responsibility is to ensure funds approved by the National Assembly are utilised for their intended purposes.
“As National Assembly members, we approve budgets for government projects and it is our responsibility to verify whether those resources are being used as approved,” he said.
According to him, the committee’s key areas of focus during the monitoring exercise include project specifications, timelines and budget implementation, which he described as critical benchmarks in assessing project delivery.
The National Assembly Select Committee was accompanied during the inspection tour by a National Roads Authority technical team led by its Technical Director, George Jatta.
