We are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of a week-long training for tertiary institutions on data submission for NAQAA’s Education Management Information System (EMIS). Over the course of the week, participants enhanced their capacity to accurately input reliable data, a critical component for research, policy formulation, and informed decision-making in the education sector.

The training was formally closed by the Director of Research and Development Mr. Sambujang Marreh who expressed gratitude to all participants for their dedication and commitment to understanding the portal for future data submissions.

This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening data quality and supporting the ongoing development of the education landscape in The Gambia. We commend all institutions for their active participation and dedication to data excellence.

CHANGE OF NAME OF AN INSTITUTION

In accordance with Section 47 subsection 1, 2, 3 &4 of the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) Act 2021 on change of name of an institution, the general public is hereby informed that WEST COAST TRAINING INSTITUTE has formally applied to the Authority for approval to change its name to WEST COAST INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE.

Pursuant to the applicable provisions, this notice serves as official publication of the application.

Any person who wishes to object to the proposed change of name may do so in writing to the Authority within thirty (30) days from the date of publication of this notice.

Training of Training Institutions on Data Submission for NAQAA’s Education Management Information System (EMIS).

A training session was conducted today for tertiary institutions to enhance their capacity to accurately submit data via NAQAA’s EMIS platform.

The training aimed to ensure data providers understand how to input accurate data, which is essential for research, policy development, and informed decision-making. Mr. Lamin B. Manneh, Director of Quality Assurance, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of the CEO, underscoring the importance of institutional data in tracking enrollment, program performance, gender distribution, and key interventions.

This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen data quality and support the development of tertiary and higher education in The Gambia.

Accreditation Status of Higher Education Institutions in The Gambia

The National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) would like to inform the general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders that the following higher education institutions in The Gambia are accredited to offer degree programmes:
• University of The Gambia (UTG)
• Civil Service University (CSU)
• University of Education The Gambia (UEG)
• University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET)
• Sup de Co Banjul
• Euclid University
• American International University West Africa (AIUWA)
• Al Ihsan University
• Al-Hikma University
• Imam Bukhary University
• International Open University (IOU)

These institutions have satisfied the minimum standards and requirements established by NAQAA, consistent with both national and international quality assurance frameworks.

The Authority wishes to strongly caution the public that any university or training institution offering degree programmes without accreditation from NAQAA is operating illegally and in contravention of the laws governing higher education in The Gambia.

Prospective students and parents are advised to exercise due diligence by verifying the accreditation status of institutions prior to enrollment. Degrees obtained from non-accredited institutions are not recognized by the Government of The Gambia and may not be accepted for employment, further studies, or professional certification.

NAQAA further urges the public to refrain from enrolling in unaccredited institutions, as doing so poses serious risks to their academic and professional prospects.

The Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the integrity, quality, and credibility of higher education in The Gambia. Institutions found to be operating outside the established regulatory framework will be subject to appropriate administrative and legal action in accordance with the laws governing tertiary education.

MoHERST Transfers Responsibility for Authentication of Academic Certificates to NAQAA

The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST) has officially transferred the responsibility for the authentication of academic certificates to NAQAA starting from April 1, 2026.

NAQAA, as the technical arm of the Ministry, is tasked with overseeing accreditation, quality assurance, and regulatory functions within the tertiary and higher education sector. The assumption of this responsibility is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen quality assurance systems and improve efficiency, credibility, and transparency in verifying academic qualifications in The Gambia.

Starting April 1, 2026, all individuals, institutions, employers, and stakeholders seeking certificate authentication must apply directly to NAQAA. Applicants must submit their original certificates and transcripts along with two (2) photocopies of each certificate.

The fee for the authentication service is Five Hundred Dalasi (D500) per certificate. Applicants are reminded to ensure all required documents are complete for timely processing.

Esteemed representatives from all universities were invited to collaboratively explore strategies that will advance research, foster innovation, and deepen community engagement within our higher education sector. Additionally, to establish a robust framework for monitoring, assessing research excellence and potentially inform the ranking of higher education institutions.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Executive Officer Dr. Momodou Lamin Tarro, emphasized the vital role of research in driving national development and enhancing global competitiveness. He underscored the importance of institutionalizing research practices within our universities to cultivate innovation, support evidence-based policymaking, and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic progress of The Gambia.

The International Trade Centre (ITC) paid a courtesy visit to the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA), led by the Country Representative, Yusupha Keita. The visit focused on strengthening collaboration between the two institutions to develop innovative and industry-relevant curricula in Arts and Crafts, Photography and Filming, and Digital Embroidery.
