Darboe Speaks Clearly on Tribalism in The Gambia

UDP leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe has made his position clear on the ongoing tribalism debate in The Gambia.

He has emphasized that no tribe is superior to another and that Fula, Wolof, Sarahule, Mandinka, Jola and all other ethnic groups are equal Gambians. He urged political, religious and traditional leaders to avoid statements that could deepen ethnic divisions. (kerrfatou.com)

Darboe has also called on Gambians to put tribal and religious differences aside and remember that we are one people and one nation. (foroyaa.net)

His message is clear: if given the opportunity to lead The Gambia, he does not want a country divided by tribalism. He wants a united Gambia where every citizen is treated equally, regardless of tribe, religion, region or family background.

The Gambia belongs to all Gambians. 🇬🇲
One Gambia. One People. One Future.

The model of centers outside the EU, tested by Italy in Albania, is entering the European debate. Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Greece are working together on the so-called “return hubs,” facilities outside the Union intended for migrants who have no right to remain in Europe.

Among the possible destinations mentioned in European discussions is Uganda, along with Rwanda and Uzbekistan. However, at present, there is no definitive agreement for a hub in Uganda.

The objective is to move part of the management of returns outside European borders and make the deportation of those who have no right to remain more effective.

The Italian model, therefore, is no longer merely a national experiment. It is becoming one of the approaches being considered by several European governments.

I still firmly believe that Europe should start demanding compensation from all these countries that have allowed their citizens to invade our continent.

18/08/2026

This passage is essentially about Ousainou Darboe trying to reassure political allies that his word can be trusted if he enters into a coalition agreement ahead of The Gambia’s election.

What Darboe is saying

1. He says his word should be trusted, not only his signature.
Darboe argues that a political agreement is meaningful only if the person signing it has the character and integrity to honor it. His statement:

“I do not agree to anything that I would not abide by. That is me.”

means that he claims he will not promise something merely to obtain political support and then abandon it later.

2. He is addressing concerns from coalition partners.
The question comes from the history of political alliances in The Gambia, where parties have sometimes reached agreements before elections but later disagreed over issues such as leadership, power-sharing, appointments, or implementation of the agreement.

So, coalition partners are essentially asking Darboe:

“If we support you and make an agreement with you, how do we know you will keep your promises after the election?”

His answer is that they should judge him by his long-standing character and political conduct.

3. He says a signature alone does not guarantee honesty.
Darboe is making a broader point about political trust. A signed document can establish legal or political obligations, but a person’s integrity determines whether they genuinely intend to honor the agreement.

In other words:

Agreement + signature ≠ automatically trust.
Character + sincerity + commitment = genuine political trust.

4. He rejects the idea that he is desperate for the presidency.
This is one of the strongest parts of his statement.

When he says:

“I’m not really desperate to be president of The Gambia. Otherwise, I could have accepted all these things.”

he means that he has already refused political conditions that he did not believe were acceptable, even though accepting them might have increased his chances of becoming president.

He is therefore presenting himself as someone who has red lines and will not sacrifice his principles simply to obtain political power.

Why this matters for the Gambia First Coalition

Darboe appears to be saying:

“If I enter an agreement with you, I will enter it because I genuinely believe in it—not simply because I need your support to win an election. Therefore, once I give my word, I expect you to trust that I will honor it.”

This is particularly important in a coalition because coalition partners must have confidence that the person they support before the election will respect the agreed political arrangement after the election.

The bigger political message

Darboe is essentially presenting integrity and credibility as his guarantee.

He is saying that he prefers to be clear about his position before an agreement is made, rather than agreeing to something today and finding a reason not to honor it tomorrow.

So the central message is:

“I will not make promises I cannot or do not intend to keep. If I agree to something, I agree because I am prepared to abide by it.”

That is the reassurance he is offering to both Gambian voters and his coalition partners.

SIR DAWDA KAIRABA JAWARA (1924–2019)

Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara was the founding father and first President of the Republic of The Gambia. Born on 16 May 1924 in Barajally, MacCarthy Island Division (now Central River Region), he was one of the most influential statesmen in Gambian history and a symbol of democracy, peace, and national unity.

After receiving his early education in The Gambia, Jawara pursued studies in veterinary medicine in Ghana and later in the United Kingdom, becoming one of the first Gambians to attain higher professional qualifications abroad. Upon returning home, he worked as a veterinary officer before entering politics.

In 1959, he became the leader of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), which championed self-government and independence for The Gambia. Under his leadership, The Gambia achieved independence from British colonial rule on 18 February 1965. Jawara served first as Prime Minister and later became the country’s first President when The Gambia was declared a republic in 1970.

For nearly three decades, President Jawara guided The Gambia through a period of political stability, democratic governance, and national development. He promoted education, agriculture, healthcare, and peaceful coexistence among the diverse ethnic and religious communities of the country. His commitment to democracy earned him respect throughout Africa and the international community.

Throughout his leadership, Jawara remained known for his humility, wisdom, tolerance, and dedication to public service. He believed strongly in dialogue, national unity, and the rule of law. Many historians regard him as one of Africa’s most democratic post-independence leaders.

Although his presidency ended in 1994 following a military coup, Sir Dawda Jawara’s legacy continued to inspire generations of Gambians. He remained a respected elder statesman and an important figure in the nation’s history until his passing on 27 August 2019.

Today, Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara is remembered as:

• The Founding Father of The Gambia
• The Architect of Gambian Independence
• The First President of the Republic of The Gambia
• A Champion of Democracy and Peace
• A Builder of National Unity and Development

“His legacy lives on in the history of The Gambia, and his service to the nation will never be forgotten.”
