OVERVIEW
Officially launched on November 15, 2020, Mirebalais Au Féminin (MiAF) is an initiative of Innovative Learning Concepts (ILC) that was created as a response to a severe lack of female role models for girls and young women throughout Haiti and in Mirebalais, more specifically. MiAF brings together adolescent girls and young women from 11 to 26 years old. ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND - ILC is a non-profit organization created in 2017, which exists to train youth in the Central Plateau and Lower Artibonite regions about the importance of Technology, Entrepreneurship and Innovation as engines of development. ILC’s programs prepare young men and women while providing them with skills that can help them in the process of starting their own businesses and/or finding work online or in person with local employers. At ILC, we also place great emphasis on learning foreign languages - such as English, which is both a commercial and international language, aside from being widely used as the language for technology. ILC has offered various job-readiness and personal development-related training sessions and conferences, and many young people are motivated to continue learning with us. MISSION - MiAF aims to improve the quality of life of young women from the Mirebalais municipality (Central Plateau region of Haiti) through practical and intensive training sessions for the employment and entrepreneurship opportunities of today and tomorrow. Through MiAF, we want to offer various programs and activities to support young women living within said community and help them grow personally as well as professionally. These programs and activities focus on the following areas:
1. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT – Help women overcome barriers that prevent them from using their God-given abilities and thus decrease their sense of self-esteem. The objective of this particular training is to boost the self-confidence of each program participant and encourage her to seek within herself the core elements which she needs to remain motivated in the pursuit of her life objectives. Additionally, this training seeks to boost the participant’s feeling of self-worth, help her keep a positive outlook on life, develop her imagination, creativity, and ambitions, while providing her with the resources necessary to achieve her dreams and aspirations.
2. ENTREPRENEURSHIP – Women are the pillars of the Haitian economy; they tend to seek innovative ways to support their own households with any little bit of financial resources available to them. Through sessions focused on business development, our participants are trained to discover what it takes to become successful entrepreneurs and learn how to engage in business activities that have the potential to help them become financially independent, improve their family’s economic situation, and ultimately contribute to overall job creation efforts for the region.
3. TECHNOLOGY AND ENGLISH – Given that technology is being used in almost every aspect of every day’s life (education, business, professional development, etc.), we opted to offer programs which range from computer literacy to graphic design to data science, and web development. Particular emphasis is placed on encouraging MiAF members to learn English so they can be prepared to venture into the world of technology which would then open many doors for them, considering the very low number of women in tech positions. Given the central role which English plays in understanding technology, we decided to offer special discounts (up to 80% in some cases) to MiAF members to study English with us and thus get them ready to rise to the challenges that lie ahead in the commercial world. Serving young girls and women exclusively, MiAF was created with the goal of exposing its members to specialized training: reproductive health, sexual education for adolescents as to prevent premature pregnancies, leadership skills, self-love, assertiveness (how do you learn to say “NO”). We offer additional notions that can help them grow as caring, knowledgeable, and responsible members of their community, so they can take better care of themselves and other individuals around them, and feel they are indebted to give back to the community that has nurtured them. They are expected to advance personally through appropriate personal development programs, and professionally through various training opportunities online and offline which allow them to successfully integrate the world of technology and business.
